Soo... since when was halos story so good?

I keep hearing people compare the stories of halo and destiny like bungie dropped the ball so bad. But I played the first 3 halos and I don't remember the story being that compelling at all. An argument could be made for halo having better characters but the story was just as tangled and unremarkable I think. Maybe I could be wrong it's been awhile since I played them because my 360 broke not long after I got it and never bothered getting a new one. I'm just confused because I hear that this game is uncharacteristic for bungie, but I've always saw halo as having amazing gameplay and a story no one ever cared about. Edit: wow this blew up quickly I only expected 2 or 3 replies, love everyone's passion. It is quickly becoming apparent that this story meant alot more to some other people than me and my friends, and that's great maybe one day we will be having this same conversation about destiny. Edit II: extended universe does not count, I'm talking in game story. I would also make this point, the people saying the story will come together with dlc are getting tons of flak on this forum. Well I would argue those books are just non-playable expansion packs. Why weren't those archs in game if they are so important to the story.

  • Halo's story was good, but for those who disagree, it was at the very least COMPLETED and had a good ending and many cut scenes. A few good parts to note were when master chief dove with the bomb through space, that was epic, or how we learned through halo 1 what killed off humanity and what the "rings" were actually created for, in general, i felt more close to master chief for whatever reason, you were able to dive into the story with him, there was life in it.. i wasnt a part of Destiny's story at all, it felt repetitive even on the first run-through.. I wanted to skip most of the cut scenes heh.. and for whatever reason, I cringed whenever the ghost spoke to me.. but I loved when cCrtana would, there was a connection between Cortana and master chief.. an almost flirtatious one, and they gave Cortana a hot body even though shes A.I. because they knew most of the people playing the game were going to be males.. they just had everything worked out in a very smart manor.. I honestly am starting to think that whoever started this whole halo thing back in the day is no where near Bungie anymore.. because i didnt get the same feelings AT ALL when playing Destiny.. :(

  • Comparatively, Halo's story deserves a writing award. That's not to say Halo's story is good -- it's just that Destiny's is that bad.

  • I absolutely love Halo's story. Easily one of the best story/universe out there.

  • It really wasn't. As far as the game went it was pretty flat just like Destiny. Two important factors where crucial for Halo to attain it's mythical status. The first was time, it lasted over a decade so It matured quite well. The second was that the books expanded incredibly upon the game universe as well as beyond it with the Forerunner Saga. Destiny gave a lot of people, myself included, the impression that they would take the gameplay from halo but with a deep storyline and character interaction along the lines of Mass Effect. I was sold immediately. Unfortunately that's not the case and it seems that the recipe has been repurposed. Hopefully Bungie will listen to what the community is saying and steer the game in a different direction while keeping the things we like so much.

    • Because it had a story, rather than just a few lines of dialogue with some strange CCG setup atached. The amount of story and lore we have in game here is about equivelent to a Cosmo magazine in the grocery store, this in turn makes Halo's somewhat mediocre story look like -blam!-ing Dostoyevsky

    • Out of all the games I have played Halo had the best story line. After Halo Reach I finally decided to pick up the books. I don't like reading at all but I couldn't put these books down till they were finished. I didn't like halo 4 multi-player at all but I still like the story.

True. Halo was mainly known for its PVP and is your typical action flick storyline, but it was well defined enough to spawn novels, an RTS (as it was originally), and many sequels that would expand the halo universe and its lore. It was well defined enough from the first game to at least give us an expectation of what would follow, even if it is your typical action genre game. As for Destiny, many of us have finished the story, and while some may have an idea of what the story is. A large portion of it is still unknown. For a franchise, will this game hold the consumers' curiosity enough to hold their attention and compel them to buy sequels? Sure, new content, new raids and and items would be great, but my question is still why are we fighting whatever we are fighting? And doing whatever it is what we are doing? The legend Destiny emphasizes so much is very much you - in what you have, what you have found, what missions you have accomplished, what difficulty you completed the missions in and how you come to represent yourself in the crucible. IMO It is not the legend of your character in game in part of Destiny's story, but rather the legend of you within the community that plays the Destiny game. I would have to say, yes, Destiny has a story through its revolutionary use of online grimoire cards. And it will be revealed In time, albeit slowly. But what Destiny is in revolutionizing the approach of storytelling, HALO is your tried and true, traditional ingredients and method storytelling and game play. (This is coming from a PS/PC guy who hasn't played all the Halos (only 1 & 2.) Did read the books though when I was much younger)

        • People tend to combine the story from the games with the books and miniseries. On the whole I thought the story in the games was solid, but I feel that the music actually created the "feeling" for the game much more than the story.

        • Now I have to ask, if you think Halo's story was not all that.... I would like to know what game stories you would rate over it and why. Of course I am talking about games that can be compaired fromt he same genre; shooters etc. Of course RPG's and games like that will have better stories, at least most of the time. Halo for what it is and at the time it came out I can't think of many shooters at all that had better stories.

          • It was great for its time...more than a decade ago. Where is the progress in Destiny? Random missions and some incoherent conclusion that isn't one really. Damn if we actually found out something about that last level and what they were going for. I am afraid for DLC...another bunch of random missions probably.

            • I'm with you advent. Halo's story never really caught my imagination at all. It was all about the shooting. Okay there were epic moments but that was all, the story for me was secondary to multiplayer, but it was fun to play through on release day/week with friends. There is moments on Destiny which I enjoy but that's only when it becomes difficult and team work is needed. I hope they sort the multiplayer out and it becomes more competitive. With the story, considering I didn't care for it to start with anything they do is a bonus. I haven't played Destiny for about a week now, I got my character up to level 27 and got bored. If this was halo I would now move onto multiplayer and play for another 6 months at least. Although, as expected its a step down from Reach comparing greatness, they left the competitive arena after halo 3 and it looks like they don't want to return. I'm hoping 343 can pick up the Batten and go back to Bungie's roots, from the halo trilogy, for me that was Bungie's pinnacle only because they knew the difference with doing things for fun and competitively. At the moment they're trying to merge the two which is driving more people away from their game.

You find an alien construct and while there get attacked by another alien entity. You explore and find out that the ring can kill worlds and is protected by the flood because its so dangerous. Eventually your ship gets sent crashing into the ring because the captain and ship get taken over by the flood. Upon learning of the rings capability the only way to destroy it is blow up your crashed ships engines. Once you do this and make it to space, you find out there are many many more such rings. AND during the game you do things like rescue downed marines, explore creepy flood labs/ruin in search of information (the difference here being you get to learn that information, its not withheld by dinklebot), there's an actual sense of urgency and direness to the plot, warthogs etc with guns on them, enemies with vehicles, (there is ONE mission this happens in ONE mission in destiny, for all we know a walker is a big robot), suspense in the end as you drive the warthog on the ship to hurry to the hangar, an actual cliffhanger...this is different from "WTF I don't even know what was accomplished". Also there is character development. You feel bad that the captain dies. There's a relationship that is built between cortana and master chief. You really hoped that the sergeant major lived but he was so bad ass he hugged the elite as the ship blew up in the distance(just in case spoilers can still happen). Our only relationship is dinklebot and he withholds info all the time. I did this all from memory I haven't played halo 1 in over 8 years! Destiny is nowhere near that memorable.

                • halo is the only fps ive been able to enjoy playing through the whole story mode. every other shooter ive tried playing pales in comparison. not that it is a 10/10 story, but it was compelling enough to preorder the next game just to see what happened next. even halo 4 was great in my eyes.

                • I played all the Halo games and never really got caught up in the story to much but least it had one. I think the problem is with destiny they don't really explain anything just a little more into what we are shooting and why would of gone a long way. It just seemed a little lazy as from what I've heard the grimoire has some great info and if that was told In the missions everything would be fine.
