Don't pre-order games in the first place, its pointless, particularly if your only buying the standard edition of said game. Regardless, GameStop only requires you to put down $5 for a game. That's not a lot. Nobody said you had to buy the game either. You could've easily waited to see more of it post-release to get a better assessment of whether it meets your expectations/standards. And depending on which version you got, you could've still returned it easily to your retailer. Never purchase based on hype for a product if you're going to complain when it disappoints you.

So you based it on one trailer? How long was it? Did you even the beta as well?

  • No not one trailer. I read plenty of materials from the Developer in the year leading up to launch. I did not play the Beta. I had concerns that if I played the Beta it would diminish my initial experience with the game and in the end that proved to be a wise decision based on the Beta feedback I have read. The Trailer itself was the one presented by Bungie to E3. It featured the ability to join friend's games on the fly as they progressed through the world. It showed no invisible world walls (where they are now in place) and promised so many things (dynamic content engine) that were never delivered.

The last thing you should ever do is base your decision on an E3 video clip as the content presented is highly subject to change since the game is still in development. Moreover, NEVER base you decision on consumer feedback alone when you can evaluate a product yourself for just $5 or you waited until the 24th, for free. Peoples opinions are greatly subjective and/or exaggerated. Always evaluate for yourself if you can. That was actually the worst decision you could've made and you paid for it. The beta gave you a very good preview of how the gameplay would be, story would be, early level progression, etc. And invisible walls? Really? Destiny is not first game to use barriers to block off the limits of an area. That is every game whether visible or not and it can be just as frustrating and limiting either way. It just depends on how you integrate it. Look at Skyrim, Fallout 3 and NV, and the Mass Effect series. No game lets you go on limitless treks across expansive vistas.

  • Yes invisible walls. Bungie said, and I am paraphrasing, "if you see that moon you can go there". Hardly the invisible walls type of sensation. I am an avid open world game-type player. Destiny flirts with the idea but falls well short of its marketing and statements from developers. Skyrim, Fallout 3 and NV have a much better idea of the open world. And I did wait. I waited 4 days for reaction and the people (my friends) who played the beta and the first 5 days post launch told me I would enjoy it. I did, for two weeks. When a developer says "this is a gameplay trailer" I expect what is to depicted to be in the the game. It is obvious many things we were shown were vut and Bungie/Activision did nothing to readjust expectations.

Read what I said. Peoples opinions are highly subjective or greatly exaggerated. Nothing is like experiencing it for yourself. Also, key word in your post: "marketing." Marketing is a word synonymous with bullshit in modern times. Never put your trust in it. Never. Ever. Developers put forth fluff and PR crap too, partly because they believe it and they're excited themselves (it is their creation) and partly because they want their game to sell and their jobs depend on it. But also partly because they don't expect certain things to be cut later on and its not entirely their fault. Every game developer and publisher wants their product to sound epic, or even revolutionary. Always take their word with a grain of salt. If l believed everything that came out of an E3 announcement or marketing campaign (in fact, E3 is a part of that marketing strategy) I'd be broke and in debt.

I can see your perspective but I don;t agree with it. Advertising has an obligation to deliver what is advertised. Marketing is "Destiny Drops on blah blah day and will be the biggest thing you ever do ever OMG!". Advertising is "look at what you get for the price you pay" Destiny marketed itself as a gamechanger, a huge social win for the FPS PVE masses. Its none of those things. I didn't just walk up to strangers. My three constant gaming buddies are essentially brothers to me. Our friendship started in games 8-10 years ago and extends far beyond the online world now. I value their opinions.

Advertising is a part of marketing. And while it is supposed to be held accountable for its actions (cannot make sweeping claims about objective facts), it not obligated to deliver on subjective facts. Its intention is to hype up the product so it can be sold. If that means dropping facts than so be it. But much of the stuff you are taking issue with are things that are not always set in stone at that point in time (development stage) and/or are greatly subjective (opinion). You can't hold anyone to anything on those points. An ad can say anything it wants on some subjective point like "this is the most amazing thing since fire was discovered." Usually they're absurd claims that can't be expected to be backed and so are silly to believe. I value my friends opinions too, but I would never trust any of them over my own on something that is subjective that interests me (a piece of entertainment). How can anyone else tell you what you'll enjoy better than yourself? Marketing typically intends to do the exact opposite. Rather than informing you so you can evaluate yourself to your needs and preferences, they try to persuade you with subjective claims or misrepresent actual facts by stretching the truth (e.g., statistics).

No. As I said, you could've played the beta. But as for post-release, you could've played it at a friend's place first (and more than just once) to get a better feel for it. Not your only option. Or, and this gets further away from what I intended, but still viable as a last resort, you can watch (live) streams of the game. Always options. The key point here is to see as much gameplay as possible without spoiling it for yourself before you buy, because that is actually what the game will be like.

  • A public beta cannot be trusted to be like the final version of the game by your own logic.

I never said or tried to imply that. In the case of Destiny's beta, it was a decent indicator of what it would be like, which is what I was trying to say. Is it always in other cases? No. But that's why I said there are other things you can do.

  • bungie falsely advertised the game and it looked really good how can a game that cost $500mill be so repetitive?

Every game becomes repetitive after you've done everything at least once. It does not mean the game is bad or won't still hold your attention for a while.
