Gunsmith what's the point???? (UPDATED)

Once you get to say level 15 the gunsmith becomes well redundant. He never has anything of use to sell other than ammo refills. Why bungie could you not have given him a random loot stream which involved exotics and legendary. I hate it when games make characters that have a 2 min role but never leave the game. Just a thought give him a random loot stream and mix up the currency used, so many use them. What does everyone else think? (update) I realize I should have said Gaurdian outfitter as well, I have more emblems that I care for but shaders are in short supply. I guess I didnt mention her because I forgot she even existed. Don't get me wrong I don't want things handed to me I like the idea of earning things but why do people think that going out and collecting glimmer or other bits such as strange coins to purchase an exotic is not earning it, if you ask me it's far more earned than all the little turds out farming loot caves for engrams. I am not asking for there to be an exotic up for grabs every day just make him and her have some more value to the end gamers. (update #2) Can we please stop posting the obvious now, we all know he sells ammo and has a small role in a bounty these two very small points do not make his role in the game anymore relevant. I would love to to see more interaction with all the NPC's, but I think the GUNSMITH should be one of the more relevant NPC's of a SHOOTER. Having him build guns or change perks simply would not work in this iteration of the game. Why? well that ability would render exotics redundant and pointless cause we could all just make one no need to find/earn/buy them. I think the future games will have far more customization, but the best course of action for these NPC's I think would be to just give them random loot streams, also removal of glimmer cap. Setting exotic at say .9% chance of drop and legendary at say 2% rares 5% GIve other stuff to sell as well like energy for coins, weapon parts. And make the purchase of exotics require x amount of weapon parts and x amount of strange coin, this would make acquiring them a bit more tricky as one might not have the required parts at the time of the exotic drop. Also involve the gun smith in some new side mission, something this game is seriously missing side missions that is.

  • They should give him a "crafting" feature where he can swap out perks or add an extra one in exchange for glimmer and mats.

    • There is a gap from levels 15 to 20 that you have to rely on random drops. Can't buy shit.

He's just a vendor... The ones in WoW sell random common (white) items no one wants. They're just there to sell you reagents/ammo and occasionally blue fusions rifles for the Pocket Infinity bounty. And to sell stuff to, but dismantling takes care of that. *fistbump for blue fusion rifles*

    • I personally found that the only use for him was buying rare fusion rifles to work towards my pocket infinity.

    • Maybe if he also sold items that boosted weapon experience gains...? Maybe rare weapon engrams so we have the chance of getting legendary weapons instead of going out for some easy glimmer and getting legendary weapons at the drop of a hat. Just throwing stuff out there.

    • Legendaries are fine, but no way on Exotics. Every single Guardian would have them then.

    • To buy rare fusion rifles to recycle. Ammo Synth for the VoG. That's absolutely it.

    • I have visited the gunsmith more than any other NPC in the tower honestly. Solely for ammo packs. They are all worthless, especially the outfitter. Same four shaders for all time, how stupid. I am halfway to rank 2 on Dead Orbit, trying to get every faction to rank 3 in case Bungie realizes that the items should change on them or provide special speeders, shaders, or something. After Dead Orbit, going back to Vangaurd since my FWC and New Monarchy are 3.

I would've thought the idea of a gunsmith would be to Smith. So maybe instead of just leaving it up to us to easily upgrade with the glimmer and parts and such, we would have to go to him to dismantle weapons, and to upgrade our weapons at a harder scale. and we would have more options for it. Different sight options, stock, barrel and such. I don't know if it'd be too late to do that or if the community as a whole would even be ok with that. Just a suggestion though. Same goes with armor outfitter chick. Shaders and emblems may grace guns as well? Or some personalization ( different option for legendaries and exotic.) Personally for an exotic, I feel a very minimal personalization is required. The fact that you have something extremely rare is personal enough, no?

    • Honestly? The pocket infinity bounty. The rare fusion rifles are the only thing you will ever need him for after level 18. That and maybe ammo synthesis if you really think you need it.

    • he is there really to help you out during earlier levels the rest of your gear you can simply grind for or find in emblems

    • His job is pretty much be the "jack of all trades". He sells stuff you need, but the games makes it to where you have to grind to get better gear. They should update him to at least lvl 20 items. Or even sell a weaker variant of your current level past 20.

    • Countless times have I run out of ammo for all my weapons. Sure, I can wait 20 seconds for all my ammo to recharge, but that only applies on easy settings. On the hard settings, ammo packs are a must. Sometimes it is too dangerous venchering out for ammo when you are up against a boss. Im talking to you Valus Ta'aurc

    • Only thing I've found gunsmith to be good for is synthesis and that occasional time when he sells rare fusion rifles, which means buy 10 to prepare for the exotic bounty!

How is it even possible to run out of weapon parts? I have +1700 of them in a cargo bay and +2000 of the armor parts for my main class O_o

      • To be fair, those ammo refills are pretty useful. As a note, I bought a pistol from him when I was lvl 18 because it had stats that fit my play style (and I was having trouble finding good pistol drops) so he is far from useless. I do agree he could be improved...maybe he could add skill slots to weapons for a fee?

He sells up to level 18 weapons. He could sell level 20 blues, but that would be about the extent of what I'd think he'd sell. He's our basic arms dealer, the ones just to tide you over until you start working towards rep for your legendaries. P.S. I check the emblem lady everyday to see what she has. She had a pretty sweet emblem with a white tree the other day.

        • I think a huge part of the problems with the vendors is that this game has next to no loot variety, and it shows. Even among the vendor refreshes we see that the loot is laughable. This is also one reason the tower is so boring, outside of the cryptarch and bounty guy we know what the other vendors have so there is next to no reason to ever go and check them. It's kind of funny, they wanted the tower to be a big social hub, but then they put next to nothing to do in there. They make a big deal about the tower opening up, but it end sup just being that back door that leads to the emissary and iron banner dude. There was a tweet before this weekend about there being a use for our strange coins and it just ends up being Xur. Sometimes i wonder if the Devs are even gamers themselves or if they try and make every decision based on what is the safest and most encompassing but also ends up being the most boring to try and appeal to the broadest range of gamers. I think the fact that devs are started to try and cater to as many gamers as possible instead of trying to do creative and new things ends up making very boring and safe gameplay elements that really show in this game with the tower, vendors, static events. The VoG is the only thing that really feels amazing and fun, i wish we had more missions that had that much creative and thought into it.
