My only problem is that we all just dropped $60 for an INCOMPLETE game. And we're already being bugged to buy the expansions, just so we can finish the story we thought we were getting for $60, and get 2 more raids and strikes. It's a good game, but not a full game. Activision ripped players off to get the most money possible, and I don't really see how anyone can argue that.

  • I can't help but cringe when I see people calling this game a "masterpiece". It's like do they work for Bungie? How can anyone be that far gone?

  • This is the way games are made now. No need to ever ship a full game when the rest can be sold as expansions. Tough if players like you dont like it, not going to be changed back either. Since most games go for only 60$.. where as older games where there was more content were often sold for over 80-90$ on the older systems. I can remember paying over 90$ for ps1 games when they came out new because there was no dlc, no expansions, no patches, no bug fixes. So really you are getting what you paid for.

  • Here in Belgium i could buy games for 50 Euros 15 years ago. (they still cost 50 on PC) Now i pay 60 € for a game. 15 years ago a could buy a bread for 0.5 euro and now a bread cost 2.5 euros. Quit complaining that you spend 60 dollars on a game while games should cost much more this day and age.

  • That's what these kids don't seem to get. That---if the cost of games went up at the same rate as the price of everything else----we'd be playing about $150 for these games. Rather than $60. They are getting one of the biggest bargains in entertainment...but are too stupid and spoiled to realize it.

  • Just because you did not buy any games over 50$ does not mean they did not exist. Plus typing in caps like you did makes you look like an idiot. The ps3 was 600$ at release as well. So that means nothing really. There were many games over 80$ on the ps1. Not all were only sold at 40-50$. Shows how little you really know about games and the history of video games.

  • The only one of those games that has a story as thin as Destiny is Smash Bros

  • The whole lack of a story was so that you could make your own. I acknowledge that it was crap but really do you care so much that it ruins the game for you? If so play MGS V ground zeroes. The story is amazing but I'll be damned if you say that game was complete due to it's effective role as a $30 demo. If it's fun for a while and makes you want to play again it's a good game. If you have to convince people it sucks and they don't instantly agree with you then you should be doing something more productive because this is just sad, annoying, stupid, frustrating, and useless. BTW Destiny and Halo basically have an identical story.

  • Ground Zeros screwed gamers way worse than what Activision is trying to do with Destiny. GZ truly was a demo, charging anything more than $5 for that was insane. But it relates to what Activision is doing here. They are deceiving us and tricking us into paying $95 for the full "Destiny 1" experience. They messin with my money, and they messin with my games. Those are 2 things of mine that I don't like being messed with

Unfortunately, I think this is what we can begin to expect from more and more games. It's definitely too complex to address in a forum post. I think several points can be made regarding the situation, but I want to point out the most blatant (and probably most overlooked). It's the fact that these games are part of a business plan that is intended to derive a profit. In general, public companies have shareholders, and those shareholders are investing in the companies with the intention of making money. This is something everyone is aware of but seems to "forget" when it comes to logical discussions on products being released, functionality, etc. The unfortunate side-effect is that profit is going to be the driving force behind pretty much all decisions regarding game development, marketing, etc. Also, a game itself is only part of a larger plan that includes all games a publisher is releasing. If you want to get a sense of this, read the quarterly investor reports, they're public. Here for Activision Blizzard: http://investor.activision.com/. Check under the 2nd quarter 2014 report for Company Outlook where they mention Destiny preorders on track for record sales. Will be interesting to see what is said for 3rd quarter when that's released. They've found ways of increasing profit with a single game. The MMO model is interesting in that you can get more money from gamers through subscriptions or paid content. Not even getting into the psychology of it all, it's a simple strategy that has proven to be successful (e.g. DLCs/expansion packs/in-app purchases). If it works, they're going to use it. All that being said, it's been mentioned that Destiny was a cash cow to boost shares. On a strategic business level I would tend to agree. I don't know if it's brilliant or devious, probably both, but with Destiny they may have found a way to create a short-term boost in sales (ambitious concept with huge hype) and also provide the potential for long-term growth of the franchise (10-yr support?). Read this for an idea of the short term boost: http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/gaming/2014/06/24/activision-blizzard-destiny-bodes-well-for-stock/11309771/ Pay attention to the 3rd and 4th paragraphs specifically. With that kind of data it puts the business strategy in perspective. Now back to the discussion of Destiny's state. I'll preface with this: None of the above is meant to diminish Bungie's efforts, especially of the individuals working to make this game succeed. But the profitability of the game always has to be considered in the context of the state of the game. They have deadlines and need to meet them. That may mean cutting content. And you know what some manager probably thinks in that situation? "Hey, we can just release it later as an update, DLC, etc." They probably have a good idea of what they can get away with. They've been doing this for awhile and have market data to back it up. Unlike most of us who just think in terms of anecdotal evidence ("most", "few", "everybody", "nobody" etc.), they have real statistical data. Not to get too sidetracked... I wouldn't be surprised if that is what happened here. Also, paying attention to marketing language is important. If they have a 10yr support cycle for this franchise, they may be making general claims which apply to later in the life of the game. They hyped this game to boost initial sales, no surprise there. But I agree that the initial content is lackluster, despite knowing there are going to be expansions, etc., it's still lackluster. I was honestly surprised how empty the "worlds" are and how redundant the story mode is. The menu, as someone pointed out could definitely be polished and simplified. The social aspect is abysmal. I don't think anyone can deny that. When that's fixed it'll be a huge boon. I enjoy certain aspects of the game and continue to play it. But I am disappointed with the initial content. I can't speak for others, but I get the sense that it's this same sense of disappointment that other so-called "naysayers" hold. However, I think a lot of the complaints regarding content that I've read are valid. Positive criticism is healthy and should be expected. Hopefully, it keeps us honest. On the reverse side, those "defending" the game are, I'm hoping, correct about additional content boosting the game experience. However, that will come at a cost. Some will pay, some won't. The decision whether people pay or not crosses the divide of "I want/need to keep playing" and "I refuse to buy into this type of business strategy". The choice is yours.

  • It's far more expensive to code 3-4 extra hours into a game like this to bundle it with the $60 launch price. The DLC makes up for the possible losses and funds the next project which will likely cost the same as the past one with better content. Although the content in destiny may look small it isn't. It's like comparing a bag of barbecue chips to a rack of ribs. These are only bits and pieces that allude to future content. The lack of content isn't the problem the lack of consistency is.

  • And if there were enough events and content in the game other than changing gear & gun designs, buying new ships (excuse me...I mean LOADING SCREENS), rerunning the previous story missions over and over, and shooting into a cave, then maybe we COULD make our own story. The "make your own story" thing is BS. The tools are not given to be able to make your own story. Let me guess at the EPIC story of your guardian this far... He was awoken by the ghost, followed him around and shot bad guys while he opened doors. Repeat that about 30 more times and maybe your guardian got a legendary, or maybe even a fabled EXOOTIIIC gun or armor. So what does he do with all that great loot? He goes and plays the same missions.. 30 more times..

You also can't go watch a movie and then at the end of it complain to the movie theater that you didn't like it and you want your money back. You still watched the damn movie! In this case you can go sell the game at gamestop and get some of the money back if you are that sore about it.

  • Actually you can absolutely demand your money back at a movie if you thought it was awful or advertised falsely. And they will give it to you.

  • No. No, it won't. You really think the game in your console right now will be updated constantly for 10 years? There will be Destiny 2 and Destiny 3 within that time, and they will be split into parts as well, so that people have to BUY all the dlc for the full experience. Bungie and Activision signed a contract to work on the Destiny franchise for 10 years...not just this one game that you're playing right now. You better believe Activision is gonna suck way more money out of gamers than that
