What are you talking about? Frodo absolutely knows that he has to get the ring to some volcano, and he knows that Sauron's going to -blam!- up middle earth if he fails, which includes the Shire. Gandalf didn't JUST tell Frodo to go to a volcano and chuck a ring in. He gave the "middle earth is gonna be -blam!-ed if you don't do this" bit rather than just shoving him out the door without exposition. In Destiny, nobody ever gives you the sense that anything you're doing is important. Without waypoints, you wouldn't even have a concept of where you should be going. People say 'Go here, get this, kill that,' but they never follow it with a 'because,' so your actions lack any context. The game does a poor job of conveying the weight of any actions to the players.

  • Yah, but does he know how Sauron came to be? Does he know how he tricked the elves to make the rings? Sure he knows basic facts like we know the darkness is bad, but he doesn't know it in depthly, he just knows if he doesn't do this task middle earth will be destroyed.

  • Exactly. He doesn't know everything. But he knows what'll happen if he fails, and he knows why what he's doing is important. Can you say the same for your Guardian?

  • Um, if the darkness and aliens win we all die, it's really not that hard to figuire out as they are shooting you like the whole time. And as far as importance, I'm not sure, everyone dying would be peaceful. also, like frodo, we can read the books in rivendel (grimoire cards) to show us that the darkness is about extinguishing all life, so yah, I think it's important that we kill that.

Okay, but none of them are attacking humans in their city. In fact, only one faction has a strong presence on Earth, and they basically seem to be on Earth to scavenge. In what sense are the Vex and Cabal a threat to Earth? Why am I trying to stop the Vex on Mars if there's no longer a human presence there?

  • And what reason does Frodo have to be suspicious of Sauron and the ring, nothing's going down in hobbiton until the black riders show up. And it's not just the fallen, it's the hive, they are the real threat on earth, just like the black riders showin up is a sign that shit isn't right in hobbiton. To be honest, other then the black riders, frodo has no reason to be an enemy to Sauron, he only has what gandalf tells him. After rivendel, which is roughly where we are on the story, (IMO, an the OP's opinion) is the only time frodo can actually form an opinion on Sauron actually being a completely dueche that needs to die.

  • Okay, but he still has what Gandalf tells him. The most we get out of the Speaker is "I could tell you stories of the battle..." followed with not telling you a damned thing. I don't think he even mentions any of the enemy factions by name. Suppose Gandalf had said "Frodo, a great darkness is coming that will destroy everyone. Take this ring to a volcano and throw it in." Is that actually enough motivation for a character in any story? The Speaker doesn't actually give us even that. He just says that the Darkness messed up Earth and that the Traveler is unable to do more than protect a single city. The ghost tells us to go places and scan things. The actions aren't placed in a larger context by any character in the game. It's weird to me that people don't seem to notice that providing a motivation and central conflict is necessary for a story in this case. Honestly, I'm not disappointed or mad or whatever in regards to the story; I wasn't expecting much. I just find the attitude that there's nothing missing bizarre.

  • Is it? I don't even know who 'The Darkness' is. It seems to be comprised of four factions, but they spend more time fighting each other than they do trying to deal with humanity and our last city. Was it the Fallen, Hive, Vex, or Cabal that actually attacked humanity? Which represents 'The Darkness,' and if it's all of them, why are they fighting each other at all? Are any of my actions in this game actually doing anything to stop 'The Darkness' from trying to kill me and others like me? It seems like it's all just to help The Traveler.

  • That is about right, except you missed the part where they tell you the darkness is the enemy of the traveler. So similar to how the traveler aid humanity, the darkness aids other races. The hive use darkness, along with another race.

  • So the Darkness is exclusively a benevolent entity, aiding numerous species? Nobody actually serves the Darkness? If they do, then why are they attacking each other? Why are the Cabal trying to stop the Vex on Mars?

  • There is no such thing as good and evil. While humanity may see the spread of the vex as evil it is just expansion of a race, which is good for them. All in the eye of the beholder. Simply because you have the same backer does not mean they have to be friends. No one says the cabal are darkness, only the vex and hive use any darkness. Have we seen them fight? This is a legitimate question because I can't remember.

  • I haven't seen the Vex and Hive in the same place. You see the Fallen fighting all three, and Vex and Cabal are definitely at odds on Mars. I didn't say anything about good or evil. I'm just saying that based on the game itself, I don't know what 'The Darkness' is, and near as I can tell, they only want to kill the giant white orb thingy. The Fallen and Cabal are both spread out a fair bit, so if they aren't related, then it clearly doesn't try that hard to destroy civilizations in a general sense.

  • Yo be honest I have no idea what is going on. Cabal as far as I can tell have had conquest stopped by the vex due to the meddling in mars. Vex are having happy fun times on Venus, which makes me believe that the fallen may have nothing to do with the darkness. The hive, darkness pure and simple. Vex, well you played the last mission, darkness.

  • and what did the Traveler do the last time the Darkness attempted to completely booty-tickle Earth?
