If you guys look at what Destiny IS instead of what you thought it would be and think of it on that basis then you would see the greatness. I think the issue is its very different for a console game, but pretty usual for a PC game. Let me know in the comments if you're a console or PC gamer and you Don't like it. I'm betting most of the complainers are console gamers, because they're not used to the dedication it takes to get gear like we see in PC games. Destiny on the other hand manages to provide this level of commitment yet keep the casual players happy as well, which is something new.

  • You must have misread my post. I said that the majority of complainers, which excludes everyone who enjoys the game, might be console gamers.

  • Anybody who's played both will tell you that PC is better. Now please hear me out, because it's not to say that PC "gamers" are better. We are just people ;), however the platform is easier to develope great games for, because you aren't locked down by a couple of companies one single unit. Apple for instance moved to the x86 architecture for their components back in 2010-2012 (I think). They've had great success, because they have this nice big open platform to develope their stuff for. Please no one comment on how much you hate or like Apple, it was just an example :).

  • As long as you have a PC that isn't a budget box then you can always add a controller to your PC and it instantly becomes what console your preference is only better graphics. Which games have been worse for you on PC?

Wonder if it was a NAT issue or something. That's one thing that I can say I don't like about PC games. I'm an IT guy so I can fix any issue that I come across, but if I wasn't an IT guy then it could get frustrating fast. Console does simplify most of this. For me it would be like "Oh before you play this game you need to figure out this accounting equation" Me - "duhhh, uhhh, yea screw you." lol

I get your point, however, I need to point out on Xbox there is this grindfest called Diablo 3 ;) and your basic other dungeon crawlers, they all require grinding. The problem, if any, could be in the crossover, meaning most console gamers who only play FPS games, either SP and/or MP, are not used to grinding. And for MP that would already be stretching it, because i.e. maxing out Prestige (CoD)/Generation (Titanfall) is truly a grind, however not necessary to compete hence the stretching it part ;).

I also think titanfalland cod don't count because you want better gear right? To get that better gear you need to keep leveling. Well you get xp every time you play a match so there's still always instant gratification. For me in diablo 3 on PC loot is random but now its almost always stats for my character so depending on if you played diavlo 3 before they made it a cake walk would depend on that too. Forgive my phone typing.

  • I've been mostly a PC gamer over the years and I get the majority of the complaints and agree with them. Yet I still want to play. The PC-type things in Destiny are VERY stripped down versions of the same systems in PC games. I don't think that's a good thing. For an online-only game the game offers no community tools in the game itself (and matchmaking in only 2 of the 6+ activities you can do). This is also not a good thing, IMO. There is no real story. There are no real characters that DO anything in the "story". No one has a name. It appears 90% of the lore of the world of Destiny is only available on bungie.net. The story missions are all, bar one, basically the same 2 missions. These are also somethings I think are not good things. But the gameplay is FUN. This IS a good thing. But as for expectations - most peoples' expectations of this game were based on things that people that work for Bungie said. Many of those things they said are either gross exaggerations of the reality of the game or simply things that aren't true. Being disappointed that something isn't what it was advertised as is a totally legit reaction, IMO. I'm having great fun playing the game right now, but all those reasons up above that I list as not good things are reasons I don't think this game (unless the paid DLC in December drastically changes things) has much of a long life. I could be totally wrong on that, but at least for myself, I can't see how this game, as is (or even with the announced things coming in Sept and Oct) will still be interesting in a few weeks. The base game really, IMO, needs an overhaul like Diablo 3 did over the course of 2 years. The original vanilla PC version of that game is probably one of the least rewarding $60 I've ever spent in video games, yet the new console version is amazing.

  • I just think there is something to be said about Bungie's ability to draw you into the game yet you have many complaints. The social abilities are lackluster, and I agree 100% on everything is stripped down compared to PC games. However, I knew going into this I had to go in with a console mindset. That is don't expect the greatness that a PC developer can bring, because these guys are locked into a mold. That mold is the mold that Sony and Microsoft set forth each time they release a system. With all that being said that I think the game is great, because Bungie did not fail us with Destiny and after the growth their company experienced after long years with Halo they have the resources to make this great. It wouldn't make business sense for them to say "ehh Destiny is what it is we are just going to let it lie". It just wouldn't make sense.
If you guys look at what Destiny IS
Destiny is an RPG, except its not. Its an MMO except not really It is a social game...but doesn't have any social features It's an open world game...that has nothing to do in its open world and sets you on a fairly linear path Its a living world...except you can't talk to anyone or interact with anyone aside from buying stuff. It is a massive world....where each world is the size of a Halo campaign map at best. It is a competitive game....that has an unbalanced multiplayer. It wants to tell an epic story....but gives us no reason to care about anything. Destiny is a normal shooter that is trying way too hard to be way too many things and ends up being great at none of them. It adheres only to the most basic elements of its attempted genres and does nothing interesting with them, not even for the story. So what Destiny is is a lot of unfulfilled potential, a gorgeous shell with a hollow core. I speak as someone who avoided talk of Destiny for the entire lead up so I had no expectations.

  • Simply by saying you avoided it, you acknowledge you were aware of the large scale of the hype, and therefor you had expectations. Plus I can counter almost all of your arguments by using one simple phrase: shared world shooter. That's how Bungie described their game. Not RPG. Not MMO. No matter how much people want to say that's what it is, Bungie themselves never said anything other than that they took elements from those genres. It's nowhere near a normal shooter. There has never been a multiplayer shooter like this before on console. The reason to care about the story is in the cards. Was it a dumb idea to put them on B.net instead of in the game? Yes, absolutely. Dunno why they did it. Plus the PvP is balanced just fine. Only things the are OP are the supers, as they should be. Learn to play and you will do fine.
Simply by saying you avoided it, you acknowledge you were aware of the large scale of the hype, and therefor you had expectations.
Expectations are born out of being involved and listening to what is being said, not out of hype. I avoided Destiny talk not as a conscious decision, but mostly because I just didn't particularly care. I would go into the Destiny forums now and again when I was bored but mostly I didn't really care about the game all too much aside from a healthy curiosity as to what Bungie was going to do next. So what I did pay attention to were what Bungie was saying, so in that regard yes, I did have expectations; expectations =/= hype, and I should have said I had no hype. I had expectations that what the developer of the game was saying was true, and when a developer claims that you have the ability to go out and explore whatever you can see, that "all of that land is playable space" I expect that to be true, but it wasn't. There are invisible boundaries everywhere, including on the space that they said you could explore. When i see Saturn rendered in game in a trailer released over a year ago, I expect it to be in the game. But it wasn't. When I hear them talk about an open world to explore, I expect an incentive to explore it and a world bigger than a Battlefield 4 map, and when I hear Bungie say it is a living world, I expect some life in it aside from dynamic time of day.
Plus I can counter almost all of your arguments by using one simple phrase: shared world shooter.
That counters two of my arguments, not all of them, and with regards to the genre, yes, Bungie was right to say that it isn't an MMO or RPG, but seeing as how actions speak louder than words I reserve the right to judge the game for what it is, and what it clearly is is a shooter who is trying pretty hard to be an MMO/RPG, but isn't doing anything especially good with any of the mechanics it apes off of other games who do it far better. Even the Shared World elements are limited in that there is no social mechanic whatsoever. It is a "social game" with the logic of a single player first person shooter that makes half hearted attempts to be everything else and never really goes anywhere special with them. All the game is is mindless shooting. But then, so is Halo. At least Halo gave you a reason to care.
The reason to care about the story is in the cards. Was it a dumb idea to put them on B.net instead of in the game? Yes, absolutely. Dunno why they did it.
You yourself admit that it's dumb so it doesn't excuse Bungie for telling a poor story in their game. The only thing the game has to stand out is the very well done, tight combat.
Plus the PvP is balanced just fine. Only things the are OP are the supers, as they should be. Learn to play and you will do fine.
The only thing that is balanced is the damage stats for the various weapon classes. What isn't balanced are the additional factors like recoil, magazine size, abilities and so on. A level 26 will still be holding more advantages than a 15 because he simply has more abilities. That's the opposite of balanced. Everyone spawns with a power weapon that has ammo in it and can kill in one shot. At that point, that's not learning to play, that's just getting lucky. This makes the game too close to Call of Duty, where map control stops being relevant and shotgun/sniper camping takes precedence. People who are already winning get their super faster and therefore gain an additional advantage, the same problem Halo 4 had and CoD has. The PVP isn't balanced. All told the game is great fun, mostly with friends, but the game isn't as great as it is trying to be.

  • Yeah and the level 15 will be a level 26 within a week, so no big deal. All told people are under level 20 for maybe 3 weeks, max. And if everyone starts with a one shot kill gun, isn't that the definition of balances?
