How to Hunter (by a Hunter)

Howdy Hunters. With more high level content being bestowed upon us, I felt the need to give some of you a little bit of a guide to playing the class more effectively. I've seen posts in this forum talking about how sometimes Hunters become the bane of a mission, when the truth is that it's not the Hunter, it's player who's using the Hunter improperly. That's where I come in to give you a little heads up. Some of you who read this probably don't need to because you already know this stuff, but if you have any advice I don't cover, feel free to chime in. Also bear in mind that much of this pertains to high level PVE content, not PVP. 1) WE'RE SOFT. In MMO jargon, Hunters are what they call "Squishy"-meaning that they're very easily damaged. Hunter armor isn't as strong as a Titan's and their recovery isn't as fast as a Warlock's, so it's important to realize that we cannot take the same hits Titans can and have to duck and cover a little longer than Warlocks to get back into the fight when near death. Luckily every ability in both subclasses is designed so that we don't have to engage enemies directly, so stop running into firefights Leroy Jenkins, you'll live longer. It's also important (and this goes for all classes) to adjust your stats as you need them. In PVP you're best suited to use more Armor, while in PVE you're more free to do what you wish, but remember that if you have a lot of one thing, you will be lacking in the other two. 2) BLADEDANCER- THE DOUBLE EDGED SWORD Pun intended. The Bladedancer subclass is far and away the superior of the current 2 available to Hunters. It offers the most defense and effective offensive perks, like vanishing when crouched and of course Blink. But as for your trusty shank itself, you should not abuse it's latent power. Yes, the Arc Blade has the ability to wipe out entire waves (or enemy fireteams in PVP) in seconds, but it doesn't protect you from damage-of which as said above, you can only take but so much of. This makes us Hunters with Bladedancer into a glass cannon, high offense-low defense, and as such you need to whip it out only when you know it's going to score KILLS. Think of it as a pro wrestler's finishing move...it ends the match, 1, 2, 3. The exception here is when maybe you do need to use it defensively, such as if you're surrounded and need to clear some room to make your escape and recover. 2.5) GUNSLINGER- THE WORLD IS YOUR ARSENAL While BladeDancer is all about stealth and movement, Gunslinger is all about being a precision killing machine. In PVE, combining Chain Of Woe (faster reloading for precision kills) and Gunslinger's Trance (improved stability for precision kills) makes even the wildest kicking weapons more stable, hence you get more shots on target and do more damage. It's essential if you have weapons such as SGA, Last Word or Hard Light, because these perks will give you that extra manageability with guns that are normally just "okay" in other classes hands. The throwing knives are also a pretty slick way to finish off enemies in PVP or PVE when you've depleted your mag. I'll not even go into the awesomeness of the Golden Gun, I'll just say this...aim true. 3) IT'S ALL ABOUT THE PERFECT SHOT. Destiny even describes what the Hunter's role is in it's actual description of the class. The function of a Hunter primarily is to cause as much damage to single opponents as possible from as safe a distance as possible. We don't have to AOE awesomeness that Warlocks and Titans do, but what we do have is the inherent ability to hit hard while nobody is looking. Scout Rifles and Hand Cannons are literally custom built for us to slip in, get some precision damage in, slip out and repeat. I can maneuver through high level strike missions literally untouched, get good add-on damage to big bosses (TRANSLATION: If teammates are fighting the big baddie, you add-on damage from range without them turning attention to you) and use fireteam members as distraction for enemies in addition to the Hunters abilities and top tier agility to leap/run/slide out of harm's way. That my friends is how it should be done. 4) THINK LIKE A REAL HUNTER Compare it to game hunting in real life. They don't run out into the wild and knife their target (well maybe in prehistoric times they did but luckily we've evolved from that, lol), they pick their spots and hit their marks. Every move is calculated and planned before taken, you just have to be a lot quicker on your toes in doing so for the simple reason of self-preservation. You should have a healthy fear of being whacked because you can be easier than any other class, so strike hard, be nimble and when you draw your blade, make sure it draws blood. 5) DRESS FOR SUCCESS Probably even moreso than the other two classes, the gear you equip plays a huge role in PVE content, especially hand gear/gauntlets, which are generally the items with perks that allow for quick reloads of weapons. If you favor one specific weapon (for me it's Hand Cannons), and can find gear that gives you quick reload for it, you'll be twice as effect on the battlefield. Hand Cannons have a reload animation of nearly 3-4 seconds by default...the perk cuts that down to under 2 seconds. Count to 2 right now. That's how long it take for you to reload a little less than in fact. Tell me that's not awesome? Now, this rules applies to all classes all the same, but with Hunters it's all in the details. Little things like that can keep you upright longer, and that's your #1 priority.

  • Hunter has some good situational abilities. Have you tried gunslinger at all? Exploding enemies with golden gun, Chain of woe and gs trance are great abilities before you fight the boss of a strike.

  • I see Hunters on the top of the pvp charts the least honestly. I'm on top a lot, but I'm pretty sure that's because I've played the living shit out of some shooters and know peoples tendencies. I feel like outside of supers there isn't much difference especially since its all about auto rifles and power weapons. I won't lie I haven't tried Bladedancer that is apparently op, but as a Gunslinger I don't feel like I shit out free kills 100% of the time. Sometimes I activate my super too soon because I don't want to do it while getting shot, or ya know... I miss sometimes. There is no way to avoid the other supers. I've doubled jumped away from them explosions so many -blam!-ing times, but I never get out of there. Also I think everyone elses melees kill in one hit? Or close to it.. Gunslinger melees take like half the shield off. I'll stick with em though. I do like having a long ranged super. Oh and why can't the damn gun crit? Shit does like the same as a hand cannon headshot on bosses.

          • I prefer gunslinger for almost everything. I switch to bladedancer in boss battles, but only for the crouching invisibility.

          • I honestly don't see teh appeal of Bladedancer, especially when compared to Gunslinger. Bladedancer can go invisible, which can be great, especially for revives, but beyond that it feels made for PVP, and that's it. Meanwhile Gunslinger has two main builds imo. 1) Knife throwing build/Golden Gun build. You take Gambler's Dagger and Knife Juggler for two daggers and reseting cooldown on precision kill as well as Keyhole for Golden Gun Penetration. Against the Fallen and the Hive this build is amazing in strikes since non-yellow bar basic enemies (Dreg/Vandal/Stealth Vandal/Thrall/Cursed Thrall/Acolyte) a precise Throwing Knife will one shot them, thus resetting the knife's cd. Against the Cabal, excepting Psions, you need to weaken the rest with a couple bullets before you can get a precision kill with a throwing knife, making it less useful, but still not bad. The vex are the FU for Throwing knife focused hunters simply because you can't get a precision hit with a throwing knife on them (at least I never have). The one exception with the Vex is teh Harpy/Hydra. While I haven't gotten the kill on a Hydra yet with a throwing knife, Harpies do not proc ANY of the hunter's "on precision kill" abilities, and it's really annoying (already made a #bug thread on the Help forums since there appears to be no Bugs forums anywhere) 2) The precision build. This build takes Chain of Woe and Gunslinger's Trance for maximum effectiveness for precision kills. Depending on your weapon of choice you may or may not actually want Gunslinger's chance. I haven't gotten a decent hand cannon yet so I'm not sure if you'd need gunslinger's trance or not with one. With this build you can use a Shingen Assault Rifle and with three stacks of Gunslinger's Trance you'll have almost no movement whatsoever. I personally will probably always stick with Gunslinger, at least for PVE, if for no other reason than the fact I'd get myself killed countless times because of being a Bladedancer (more so than my current playstyle :P)

            • The shader you pick factors in to pvp greatly. Pick a shader that is kind of muddy or blends into the ground like bloodpact when playing pvp. I can't tell you how stupid it is to see a ninja wearing bright red/pink.

              • It's all about agility and moving around the battlefield as quickly as possible. Killing in any way you can is fine but you gotta move move move. If that doesn't work and your surrounded then you have to use your arial speed (Hunters have the fastest directional air speed) to get our of aoe/hit zones and disappear. No poking out to see. Disappear. My opinion on Hunter weapon choice: Auto cannons- if your gonna use one make sure you have a damage soaker in front or you can burst fire. I wouldn't use one honestly even if it was the best thing I had. Hand cannons- My weapon of choice.. But don't use one unless your good enough to make head shots consistently. Normal sight range is medium so getting in close makes no sense whatsoever. Nice perks help out with stability for quick target acquisition and your God should be accuracy (fighting a large job means you have to really move to prevent getting hit while reloading). Also, find a gun that fires exploding rounds. Rare but So so nice. Scout rifles- same as hand cannons except your job is to weaken mobs before your team gets to them. If your within melee range, switch to your secondary or run. Do to be a hero, scout wielding hunters make for weak points due to role confusion. Plus rifle- the happy choice. You are the vanilla hunter and can get the job done from any range. Headshots make the difference between good and great Pulsers. Shotguns- unless your in PvP and performing hit and runs, just don't. Your asking to soak up damage and get destroyed. Snipers- I don't like them, I don't use them but if you do make sure to make quick target choices. AOE/dangerous enemies first! Fusion rifles- my bail out/enemy shield destroyer. A must for any frontline Hunter. Just my 2¢.

                • Am I the only one who thinks it a bit strange that both the titan striker and the hunter blade dancer are melee subclasses and yet whenever you get too close to a boss you get insta-killed? What is bungie's reasoning behind this?

                    • Personally I play a blade dancing hunter with sniper(for PvE) or shotgun(for PvP) and either hand cannon or pulse rifle depending on which I have on me, and I find that starting a game (PvE) Taking the big enemies with snipers, then just jumping, dodging and generally running around everywhere on the map knifing and head-shoting everything in sight works pretty well

I think you should talk about positioning and spacing as a hunter, and builds/synergy combos. Also you should mention FWC fast twitch as a good build to work towards. Also I think scout rifles are better suited for gunslingers, where you have throwing knife for close quarters and are supposed to fight from range. But I think Bladedancers are made for close quarters so should consider AR.

                        • Using arc blade defensively is a bad tip I think. Many people will be under fire by 3 people, trigger their super, then die. Instead, it should be used in a planned offensive strike.
