Bigger fire teams would be better but I disagree with you saying that the world's are big. They really aren't. You get an open area followed by a long linear path leading to another open area that's full of nothing but enemies. If you do find a building to explore, chances are it's empty, or you've already explored it in story mode. Still, bigger fire teams would be nice. However, they would have to up the difficulty to compensate.
