the story finally clicked and here it is.

There is a story and the truth is, you are only a helper. A do boy, if you will. The reviewers only half got it. There is a reason you are not given a back story. You really don't matter. The central character of this story is your ghost. He is overly curious but needs some muscle to protect him while he goes off scanning this or interfacing with that. That is where you come in. He resurrects you to be that muscle Sure he claims to be your ghost, but your his. He got upset with you for calling him "little light" and making a deal with the awoken in reef without discussing with him first. He was also very excited when you take him to the moon. It also explains why the speaker couldn't really be bothered telling you about the battle that fatally damaged the traveler. Because in the grand scheme of things, you are just a minor actor. There to protect your ghost, as he gathers intelligence on his enemies and reclaims the old technology of a bygone era. *** EDIT *** ( Thanks to Chadogtha) We are called a guardian by our ghost, but not of the last city. We are guardians because that is our role: to guard the spawn of the traveler. When you go to the moon, your ghost was like "oh well. He dead! WHERE IS HIS GHOST!"

  • I like this idea a lot! The people who hated the story were just too lazy to look into it. Great post! Thumbs up to you.

    • Here's my take. I just bought a game for $60 and literally have zero idea about what the direction of the game is and have nothing to look forward to until they announce something new. Cool...I'll do the same thing 504 times until I get light+ armor. I want to like this game. I really do.

    • This is a pretty good catch, I must say. Although I don't necessarily agree that the main character is your ghost. It makes the guardians feel insignificant to some degree. With that being said, I do believe we are meant to feel insignificant. Not because of ghost but simply because we literally just "woke up". The tag line for the game is "Become Legend", we are not legends yet and won't be for a long time therefore we are merely body guards at the moment. As the story continues, some of us will begin to step into the light and become Legendary. Think of Master Chief, he is a legend in the the halo series. When we first step into his shoes, he is already known. He's already the Master Chief. we are not there yet and it will take time to get there, but when it arrives, the Darkness will be shivering in their panties.

        • I wonder how many people read books. I've read dozens of books where the first chapter clearly was trying to set up the rest of the book but in order to do so it had to sacrifice excitement. Basically it was doing all the housekeeping early on. I feel/hope that's what Destiny is doing in it's first chapter. We were introduced to so many alien races, planets, and plot points. Nothing was explained in great detail but nothing was left undiscovered. A lot of ground was covered but hopefully now we're set to really explore and figure out what the Hell is going on in the solar system.

        • Yea, it did seem fisy to me as well, i have learned to doubt the light as much as the darkness (Harry Potter and the methods of rationality really helped there) , i really want to see more of the story, characters and i want to learn the dark secrets of the traveler (btw did he abandon the fallen?)

        • Did anyone actually just do the story missions, one after the other? Or did they break it up with a lot of explore and crucible in between? If it's the latter, I can see why the story doesn't make any sense. Don't confuse this with me saying the story is good. It was a solid meh'. I had no attachment to my ghost, I literally felt like I was just there to wreck shit, so the ghost could do recon. While this is a story, it's not really a story that makes me feel really involved. But there are 2 DLC packs coming fairly soon. I am willing to see what they add to the story before I cry tears of Internet soapbox white knighting. House of Wolves should give us some more content tied to the reef, excite.

            • I did a bit of research on a couple of things regarding what we have seen in the live action trailer and in the game and the two that stuck out are the Jade Rabbit and the Eight Ball Keychain. Symbolize is huge with me and the origins of the story. Check out the links if you are interested. So we are zombies, raised from the dead by some god like orb and then just muck about killing all other races we come into contact with because a guy told us to. What is the darkness? Is it the Vexx? The Fallen? The Cabal? We kill ALL of them without mercy. Maybe WE are the darkness. Tricked by the traveler into becoming his personal zombie army. We are called Warlocks, Titans and Hunters. All things with negative, evil roots. They are called Knights, Wizards and Accolytes. Things with positive attributes. Also, the speaker is a shady dude. Just sayin'.

              • My take on the story en progression of Destiny. Sorry for the wall of text, but i tried to make some cracks A lot of people are upset because there isn't a lot of story in the game itself, but there is a lot of information in the Grimoire. It's actually pretty amazing if you read it, and gives a lot of background on all the things in the game. There are a few topics that go into detail what people think the story is about and if you read the topics you can see that Destiny has some pretty excellent stories inbound. After reading the Vex topics in the Grimoire it's obvious that the Vex are some sort of superpower that can control time and space and on one of the cards it says that they are working on something big, but that big thing could already have happened in our time. This is from the Heze Protective card : The Protective is clearly engaged in a colossal project, but as with much Vex behavior, it's unclear whether their ultimate purpose is even comprehensible to us. The Protective may be reacting to an event that has yet to occur, or working towards a goal that - to us - is already historical fact. So they are working on something big that maybe already has happened in our time. Could that big thing be the Golden age or the downfall of the Golden age? I think that eventually we will get to timetravel in Destiny (not in this on, but Destiny 3 or 4) And we will get to see the Golden age ourself. It could even be that we are the cause of the downfall of the Golden Age and the Vex are now learning from us how to beat us in the past. I even think that in Destiny 4 (or whatever entry seems fit) we will have to make a choice between the Light and Darkness (Since the exo stranger says something about making a choice even if it's not the right one.) And we will have a big ass epic space battle between the 2 factions to save (or destroy) the Golden Age. I don't think we are necessarily the good guys in this story, but now we see this side of the story and because we're on this side, this is the right side. In future entries it could be possible we explore the universe from the side of the Darkness and we see that the Traveller isn't so good either. Let me know what you guys think. Since reading the Grimoire i'm really interested to see how the story plays out. They have a lot of possibilities with the different races and their motives for fighting. I just hope they don't make it a typical "we're the good guys and everything that shoots at us is bad" kinda story. Only time will tell. So let me know, together we can probably find a lot more theories and ideas for how the story and the universe fits. BTW: English isn't my native language, so sorry if some things in this post don't make sense

              • Here's my take: The Traveller and that "God" thing in the end (The Heart I guess) are no different from each other really. They both came for self-preservation. The Traveller came and "blessed" us with the light that begun the Golden age of humanity, which is a sugar coated way of saying, The Traveller needed something to help defend it's being and gave us the means to do so for it. The Fallen are at war with the Hive and us, and the Vex are at war with the Cabal. The Vex and Us are basically the same, dead objects brought back to life by some super power "thing". The Hive were actively trying to destroy it in the one mission with the giant shard, but we returned that to the Traveller for it to heal. The Fallen have not tried to destroy it by any means, neither have the Cabal, but they have been messing with the Vex portals and trying to hold them down. The Hive have probably been manipulated by the Traveller before, which is why they seek to destroy it. The Traveller won't choose them, so they want to destroy the Traveller before it destroys them. How else would they have so much data already about the Traveller? The Fallen are trying to wipe out the Guardians to become the new Guardians, they have seen what the Traveller can give and they want it for themselves. Same story with the Cabal. They have seen what the Heart can do to create Vex and they want it for themselves. Another point to drive this home. We have abilities such as solar, arc and void. Fallen have Sepkis (machine "God") that have void abilities, Hive have shields that defend against different elements, cabal have arc and vex can teleport or blink. These simalarities show that they have all had some interaction with Traveller given abilities, most interestingly the defensive abilities of Hive who probably developed methods to defend against the Travellers powers. Vex also have shields to negate elements, probably given by the Heart. Are the Vex and Hive working together? They have never been seen fighting each other in the game.... That's all I got. Let me know what you think.

                • The story is whatever you want it to be. If you wanna dust aliens on Mars or Venus while running errands for NPCs on the tower, that's your story. If you want to become a crucible champion and compete in the trials, thats your story. If you wanna be a PvE hero, that's your story, its as simple as that.

(Theory/Rant Ahead) Maybe it's just me but has anyone here ever read Plato's Republic. Because I noticed a huge parallel in the city described with in it and the Last City/Tower. Plato's Republic is a classic piece of Athenian philosophy. In it Socrates speaks of the nature of what is just and unjust. In doing so he speaks of what would be the best society. The city he describes is a triciarch with 3 classes. Working classes, police force, and Guardians. He uses that word "Guardians to describe the intelligent warrior class that protect the city. (See the Parrellel yet?). Well, the Guardians aren't just warriors. They are chosen both by society and through being blesses by gods to become Guardians. They literally are so virtuous they are godly just like WE are touched by the Traveler. The Guardians here in the book are a select few born to serve and lead through strength and wit. Among them is a Philosopher King whom leads the whole city... The Speaker is quite wise, leader of the guardians, literally born of the Traveler . (Interested yet?). Well here's one more for you. Spartans in Halo are based around a Warrior race and war culture with little democracy. Athenian culture is similar to Sparta's in customs the the 2, while existing around together at one point the 2 were very different in political and social views. So then, If Halo is based on real Spartan culture and Destiny on Athenian Philosophy, this making one based around reality and the other a sort of fantasy on what could be, then what does that say about Bungie's new IP? To me it says that they stayed close to their roots but are branching out to a new realm of gameing and ideas at the same time.

                        • I am very convinced Bungie is taking a page from the storytelling of The Witcher: You wake from the dead with amnesia. You meet allies and fight against the dark forces. You are sent on a quest. You never learn anything interesting about the world or lore if you don't talk to NPCs or read your journal. Progression is slow. The story is slow. The art and world design is amazing.

This is not halo where the games are episodic at the end we wait for a new game, this game will grow and change over time don't expect everything in the first weeks. You act like you have never heard of WoW or FFXIV look at how their story has grown over time, just wait you'll see.

                            • I wrote this replying to another guy asking about the Halo and Destiny worlds being in the universe and if there were two Earths.
The forerunners in Halo had already advanced two desperate civilizations way way WAY back in the day. They then released the flood, causing mass panic throughout the galaxy. Eventually all life was destroyed (this could be the Destiny timeline). Later on they restarted humanity and remade the halos. Jump a few thousand years ahead, humanity technology advances (begin Halo timeline) and you have the start of the halo wars. Also think about this. The didact. He has that giant orb thing. Remind you of anything? (Hint: The Traveler). Now, when the librarian tells Master Chief the whole story she says that she needs to accelerate his evolutionary process. She also mentions how the forerunners' worst enemy was him. Did she mean humans or John himself? What if Master Chief eventually gains the powers of the didact and the forerunners and he somehow travels back in time? What if his orb (the one the didact travels in) is white, not black. What if he, in a way, is the new didact? He goes back in time to attempt to aid humanity from the forerunners and their evil creation; the flood. What if the darkness is the flood? What if the didact had already tried to save people affected by the flood back in the Destiny timeline with the composer and they became the Vex. After all, do the Vex and Promethians not have similarities? Think about it. At first, we believed the Promethians were simply machines. How do we know that the Vex are in fact ONLY machines? Are we sure they are not part human? Then they both have the ability to somehow teleport. Sure some of the other ones do too. But look at the similarities between Promethians and the Vex. What I'm getting to: maybe after Halo 4 (Halo 5 even) Master Chief evolves and travels back in time to the Destiny timeline as the Traveler and aids humanity against the Forerunners and the Hive, Vex and others are aliens looking for forerunner technology and try to obtain it from the Traveler (Master Chief). This would make it the biggest battle in Halo yet and might end in the end of everything but would stick Master Chief in some kind of time loop with him being born again thousands of years later.
What do you think?
