Destiny review scores are a joke. It's almost like a bunch of 'outed' hack journos agreed to give Destiny 6/10 across the board to vent their anger at the gaming community.

I'm not one for conspiracy, really I'm not. But when every major review outlet gives the exact same low score to a quality game just a week after Gaming Journalism has been under fire, it kind of reeks like bullspit to me. I'm not going to re-tread the whole #GamerGate debacle, but whats easy to see is that ALOT of journalists were very very pissed about it, despite a few token gestures here and there to look 'respectable and accountable'. What I find baffling, GENUINELY baffling, is how a game of Destiny's caliber can get the same score, a relatively low score, from every major outlet with almost exactly the same review description in every case. And all it ever boils down to is this: 'The story is a bit hackneyed, gameplay can sometimes be repetitive and I was expecting more' These are three valid points. Destiny's story is kind of bland compared to previous Bungie games and the missions are quite samey at times and DinkleBot DOES do a helluvalot of scanning things. But these three points are not of themselves a justifiable reason to give a game such a low score when everything else in the game is so well crafted and solid and enjoyable. Now, I'm not necessarily suggesting that every journo called every other journo and signed an affidavit agreeing to all give Destiny a 6/10 and follow the same script template for their reviews, but it certainly feels that way and maybe on some subconscious, unified, 'pissed off at #GamerGate level they all came out with their whiny, crappy reviews in one voice. Whatever the case, whatever the reason, regardless whether they colluded by email/text/phone or whether their minds melded in some weird spiritual borg-esque military fashion, THEY ARE ALL COMPLETELY WRONG Destiny is not an amazing game. It's certainly not a 10/10 (I hate scores anyway) but it is an extremely solid, well-crafted gaming experience that despite hinting at being a long-term experience in-potentia, is still in its own way a whole package. Artistically, it's beautiful. Shooting mechanics are very responsive (But an option to turn off auto-aim would be nice) The story, while light and occasionally meandering, is contained within itself as well as also hinting at a greater story arc The RPG elements are deep enough to have meaningful impact, but light enough to be user friendly to the vast majority of gamers Matchmaking in the campaign is one of the quickest I have seen in any online game and jump/in out is easy and smooth and extremely useful. The amount of content in story and PvP is well up to snuff for any of Destiny's counterparts All of the UIs are extremely easy to interpret and master It's LOADS OF FUN! I could make a much longer list of Destiny's plus points but I'm not going to labor my point. Despite a few short-comings such as the lack of individual audio sliders (Gamechat is often lost among all the music and SFX), the inability to turn auto-aim on/off, No clan roster on the pause menu to find & join clan members who aren't on your friends list; despite a few gripes like these, Destiny is all-in-all a really, really solid gameplay experience and hints at some great stuff to come over the next 10 years. If I stopped playing tomorrow, I'd still feel like I had my money's worth... and then some. Great Job Bungie! A solid start to a new franchise. I look forward to stronger deeper scripts, some tweaking to the mechanics, some social refinements and plenty of awesome additional content in the future. As for the 'Reviews'... Screw 'em!

I have to agree. I like to think of the review score is like net promoter score. Therefore 9-10 is a recommendation, 7-8 is neutral, and 0-6 is there are reasons to avoid the game. I find it hard to believe that the majority of people who played the game would not enjoy their purchase or there are good reasons to avoid the game. I can see as low as 7. I can see reviewers feeling it was a good game but just not enough to keep them hungry for more. Personally I put it at 8.5 The core experience is solid and addictive. They just need to step it up a notch with story missions and social experience to make it make it truly memorable.

I felt like all the bad reviews were pretty harsh until I played the PvP side of the game. I'd give the PvE side of the game a 9/10, the difficulty is spot on, the rez mechanics are nice, the drop systems are good, the replay value is high. The PvP side of the game on the other hand is a 3/10 at best. The amount of one hit kill mechanics is out of control. The only people I can see enjoying the PvP are people attracted to explosions and shiny objects that just like to hop on and just smoosh buttons for a while without using their brain. So when you combine the PvE and PvP sides of the game a 6 is about right.

    • Reviews aren't about giving reasonable points, they're about generating reputation and popularity so more people read them.

    • Maybe if Anita sarkesian was the 4th playable class in this game would have gotten a 10 on 10 by all the journalist as that seems to generate a lot more news :)

    • Id probably give it a 7/10, it could be better if the story gets better with all the expansions and what not.

      • If i really had to put my finger on one problem with most of the reviews i`ve read, its that every single one of them look at the game as an mmo. Bungie has stated time and again that its not an mmo so why do they review it like one

        • Every time a game comes out, reviewers expect a healthy 'donation' from the developers/publishers. More often than not, the ones that do get better reviews, even if their game is lackluster. Game journalism is corrupt and has been corrupt since online reviews became common, possibly before then, but moreso after. My guess is that Sony, or Bungie, or Activision, somebody, didn't pay off the sites, and so they nitpicked and pulled these silly criticisms out of their ass. Any everyone else jumped on the bandwagon afterwards. The trolls' complains became justified because reviews were saying the same things. PC players became butthurt because the game wasn't released on PC. If the game is so bad, why do you want it on PC so badly? Right, because it's not bad, you're just having a brain aneurism because you can't play the game. tl;dr Reviewers didn't get paid off, stupid people are echoing the false reviews, PC players are mad.

        • Anybody who's invested time into destiny meaning story, strikes, pvp and etc knows destiny at the least an 8. Did it meet expectations no but it's not on the same level as brink that's dumb. The shooting is clean and fun. The enemies are good on harder levels. And the graphics and worlds are gorgeous. In some aspects it's repeitive but what game isn't. This game is a solid game. A bunch of places are going to need to re review it http://www.gameinformer.com/games/destiny/b/playstation4/archive/2014/09/15/destiny-game-informer-review.aspx

          • I think a big problem is that a lot of these reviewers squeezed in a lot of playing time within too short of a timeframe. They got burnt out. I watched a few videos of reviewers playing and they are like level 14 in a 15-16 zone and under geared complaining about bullet sponge bosses... I've played almost 15h and I've spread it out over a week. Its a good game. The mechanics are great. The graphics are good. The music/SE are good. The atmosphere is good. I've been getting quite a few decent drops for loot. Matchmaking is good, no server issues. Crucible is fun, strikes are OK. Then there's the story...its...OK. The writing is...not so good, but its not horrendous. The acting in some cases saves it, in other cases it doesn't. Its a mixed bag. The grimoires have a lot of info, but it would have been nice to at least see them in game. So the main con's for me are story/RPG elements, (lack of) communication and boss mechanics/strategy. And these are things that can and should be fixed. I'm thinking there are strategies that we haven't figured out yet in terms of the strike bosses... All in all, despite what needs to be fixed, the low scores were just click bait. You can't tell me that watchdogs, cod, Titanfall get 8s and 9s, and Destiny scores the same as Knack? That's just ridiculous.

          • MMOs always get bad scores. They play for a few hours then rate. Ridiculous for a game like this that will only grow and grow. Still the reviewers have found something new to hate instead of CoD for years to come now. Watch them all give Guild Wars 3 and Battlefield (iterations) 10/10 even though the latter never works as intended if at all. Typical Activision big corp hate. A games reviewer is simply someone not clever enough to write games.

          • It really is an instance of shocking disagreement between the general population of players and the critics. It happens with movies, too; for example the new Planet of the Apes had high 90s on Rotten Tomatoes, and it was a snoozefest, IMO; not even close to the original reboot. Point is there's no need to get angry about it. Just form your own opinion, and tell people about it.

            • GI just came out with their review, I've linked my thread where I summed up the pros and cons, also have a link to the full review. They gave Destiny an 8.75, and frankly, been the most fair review I've read yet. But, GI as always been a step above everyone else frankly

            • Wanna know why this game has bad reviews? Lets mention something: the lack of balanced gameplay. The weapons and abilities become op in both PvE and PvP. All the people I play against in the Crucible just use op specials to guarantee that they win.

They really are. Flaws and all, anyone who gives this game below AT LEAST an 8.5 is just salty because of Bungie not sending them review copies. The game is really great and anyone who likes bungie's games knows that. That's not to say it doesn't have flaws but the scores its getting are embarrassing. And I'm not talking about embarrassing for the game. Edit: When playing with friends online, I feel as though their on the couch with me. It doesn't even feel like its over the Internet. Its awesome. Just thought id throw it out there

in short OP used to regular inflated scores of 8s getting 9s and is pissed a 6 finally gets a 6. This game is fail in every single way. shooting mechanics are fail, go play Halo CE or even Halo 2.

                  • Yeah....six is not a low score. It just seems that way because games rarely get scored accurately, in a 1-10 system most games should rate around five or six.
