Destiny review scores are a joke. It's almost like a bunch of 'outed' hack journos agreed to give Destiny 6/10 across the board to vent their anger at the gaming community.

I'm not one for conspiracy, really I'm not. But when every major review outlet gives the exact same low score to a quality game just a week after Gaming Journalism has been under fire, it kind of reeks like bullspit to me. I'm not going to re-tread the whole #GamerGate debacle, but whats easy to see is that ALOT of journalists were very very pissed about it, despite a few token gestures here and there to look 'respectable and accountable'. What I find baffling, GENUINELY baffling, is how a game of Destiny's caliber can get the same score, a relatively low score, from every major outlet with almost exactly the same review description in every case. And all it ever boils down to is this: 'The story is a bit hackneyed, gameplay can sometimes be repetitive and I was expecting more' These are three valid points. Destiny's story is kind of bland compared to previous Bungie games and the missions are quite samey at times and DinkleBot DOES do a helluvalot of scanning things. But these three points are not of themselves a justifiable reason to give a game such a low score when everything else in the game is so well crafted and solid and enjoyable. Now, I'm not necessarily suggesting that every journo called every other journo and signed an affidavit agreeing to all give Destiny a 6/10 and follow the same script template for their reviews, but it certainly feels that way and maybe on some subconscious, unified, 'pissed off at #GamerGate level they all came out with their whiny, crappy reviews in one voice. Whatever the case, whatever the reason, regardless whether they colluded by email/text/phone or whether their minds melded in some weird spiritual borg-esque military fashion, THEY ARE ALL COMPLETELY WRONG Destiny is not an amazing game. It's certainly not a 10/10 (I hate scores anyway) but it is an extremely solid, well-crafted gaming experience that despite hinting at being a long-term experience in-potentia, is still in its own way a whole package. Artistically, it's beautiful. Shooting mechanics are very responsive (But an option to turn off auto-aim would be nice) The story, while light and occasionally meandering, is contained within itself as well as also hinting at a greater story arc The RPG elements are deep enough to have meaningful impact, but light enough to be user friendly to the vast majority of gamers Matchmaking in the campaign is one of the quickest I have seen in any online game and jump/in out is easy and smooth and extremely useful. The amount of content in story and PvP is well up to snuff for any of Destiny's counterparts All of the UIs are extremely easy to interpret and master It's LOADS OF FUN! I could make a much longer list of Destiny's plus points but I'm not going to labor my point. Despite a few short-comings such as the lack of individual audio sliders (Gamechat is often lost among all the music and SFX), the inability to turn auto-aim on/off, No clan roster on the pause menu to find & join clan members who aren't on your friends list; despite a few gripes like these, Destiny is all-in-all a really, really solid gameplay experience and hints at some great stuff to come over the next 10 years. If I stopped playing tomorrow, I'd still feel like I had my money's worth... and then some. Great Job Bungie! A solid start to a new franchise. I look forward to stronger deeper scripts, some tweaking to the mechanics, some social refinements and plenty of awesome additional content in the future. As for the 'Reviews'... Screw 'em!

    • I like Destiny very much. Great and unique artwork, rich background and a wonderfull satisfying FPS-Part with PvP and PvE and Coop+Raids. OK. the storytelling is a bit stiff, itemization needs tweeking and the MMO-parts are rudimentary; but hopefully its only the beginning. In comparsion to Halo 4, I have more fun and Destiny has much more in store and so it should deserve at least a metascore arround 8.5.

    • I feel like the reviewers just didn't know what kind of game they were playing. You don't play this type of game for an epic story. You play a game like the last of us and then its over and you never play it again. This kind of game has unlimited replayability and while I agree it is kind of shallow on content now I have hopes they continue to add a bunch of stuff. I wonder what IGN will give it. IGN Italia gave it an 8.8 I think

I honestly think what happened here is Jim Sterling was one of the first reviews to be released and he gave it 6/10 and a few other journos went 'Oooh! Me too! Me too!' while completely lacking the ability to explain why. Jim Sterling gave Mario Kart 7 5/10 when the rest of the reviews were largely 10/10 but he at least did an incredible job of explaining his reasons, as he always does. The one site I never read or trust anymore is Polygon. Those guys are complete jokester hipsters and couldn't write a review if their lives depended on it. Their reviews read like they're re-typing the press release while just changing a few words and then they whack a score on at the end without explaining why. Pretty site, but terrible terrible writers/reviewers. Even when they make videos they sound as excited about games as Ben Stein from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I guarantee 100% the only reason Arthur Gies gave Destiny 6/10 is because Jim Sterling did. He's an extremely weak writer... :D Still, I'm absolutely loving this game and can see the incredible potential in its future. I do think anyone who released a review of it last week was mistaken to do so. In their review videos they showed footage of them at levels 7 to 10 and even if you played up to level 20 you haven't experienced a tiny fraction of what this game has to offer! Have fun all! :D

        • The game is great so far, but not THAT great...if bungie wish greatness they should hear the comunity, here are what i believe that's missing on game: 1 - space combat why? because if the game wish to be as big as it is intended to be, space travel and combat should be one very good way to do this. greatness feelings while traveling and crossing an asteroid belt and uncovering unknown galaxies...possibility to fly with our squad mates would be awsome. Bungie imagine this kind of thing on destiny, sure you will shut the mouths of any gamespot, ign and even for players that wished a bit more than just shooting. 2 - Other cities and hq's why? have only the tower is a bit limited as we have only one place to go and find everyone...if the game is big as they say how could everyone be confined to only one HQ??? 3 - more different enemies why? The more random they seems more tacticals we need in order to defeat them. Different kind of enemies is variety in the game. 4 - more 2 powers and higher level cap why? with a total of 4 powers one for each situation it could be better and let the combat more dinamic. 5 - powers quick select why? while in the battlefield it's not very dynamic open the menu and then select (for the titan) the shield of the explosion ground with the ps4 we could use the touch button like this: slide up: WARD OF DOWN slide down: TITAN SMASH slide left: power 3 or favorite weapon 1 slide right: power 4 or favorite weapon 2. on pc we have many keys, also on xbox one, ps3 and x360, is just put any button combinations. Just to start...

        • A lot of times, games that I've enjoyed a fair bit have turned out to be 5/10 or a 6/10 or w/e. The thing is, reviews are really only the opinions of the reviewer, and should be taken as such. That's why I never use a review to judge whether a game is good or not without playing it.

        • I feel like they're giving the game negative reviews simply because it's the "hip" thing to disagree with whatever is big at the moment. Highly anticipated game got good reviews? Not surprising. Big budget game that people have looked forward to told to tank? Sounds much more "exciting." Criticizing a game for not doing enough earth shattering new age previously unconceptualized game mechanics is completely asinine, and almost every review mentions this. When was the last time a good game actually did something "revolutionary"? I'm forced to assume these reviewers are laying it on thick just to attempt to be shocking. Are there things I'd like to see added or tweaked? Sure. Is the game a 6/10? Give me a -blam!-ing break.

          • The game is good but bungy started a huge hype train. If you do this be aware that people might believe you and if you cant keep up your promises it will have consequences. I do enjoy destiny but it has it flaws and everything above 7/10 wouldnt be a fair rating. Still the the game is solid and has potential to get better so no need throw away destiny now, because i can imagine in a few months things might be better. But the current state has it flaws.

Are you sure the game simply isn't as good as you think? Or, as hear me out now, they might have a different opinion than yours? I also like how people react as if a 6/10 is the same thing as "this game is garbage; I wouldn't force Hitler to play it it's so bad" even though 6/10 is still above average.

                • If you can take anything positive from the numerous mediocre reviews, try this thought. The reviews plus player feedback will push Bungie to work to improve the areas that are being given so much criticism. Whether or not you or others feel the game is great, there are legitimate points being raised. This game has a great foundation. There are some really great accomplishments being pointed out. It is in need of some work. Negative criticism makes a good company and good people, who are talented and dedicated to producing a good product dig in and work harder to succeed. Bungie knew this game was a risk and clearly stated it. It has been a sales success. Now they have that success to build on. Whatever you like about the game now, I think you will like it even more when Bungie takes the criticism to heart and takes that next step. I don't think they want this series of reviews to be the final word on such a great undertaking...........do you?

                • I must be the only person that sees a review with a score of 5/10 as average. Same a 2.5 out of 5 stars for a movie review. Destiny quite frankly is a 6/10 game. Sitting at just above average. Maybe reviewers will come back after a few months, and review it again after some time to see how things paned out.

                  • They've reviewed the game how it is NOW. Short, slightly buggy and easy. Perfect for a 6. But they've not experienced Raids, Weeklies or Exotic Bounties. They haven't experienced an increased story, 5th race or other planets. They haven't just taken a stroll around the planets, searched for Ghosts or tried to do a legendary strike just because it's possible. I bet that if they'd review the game in a year again, it'll be a lot higher.

the reviews are low because expectation was high. If expectations weren't so high, this game would be a 7 or 8. But people were expecting that this game would be a game changer in the industry and bungie sure made it seem like it would be. the good? 1. great graphics 2. multiplayer is fun 3. shooting mechanics are clean, controls are nice. the bad. 1. bland story 2. you have to defend alot of doors = lack of variety in missions ( can take a note from the call of duty series for single player, those games always have me on the edge of my seat for 4 hours). remember when you can choose to mow down a bunch of civilians when undercover, just to get wacked at the end? or doing an escort mission under intense fire, assaulting a building, chasing bad guys through the slums, etc etc. this game has none of that, you get to defend doors, and then kill a boss. you mow down waves and waves of enemy charging a door, then a boss appears. needs more variety, maybe it can't replicate whats its like to fight in a modern urban war like COD, but the alien war is unimaginative. 3. lack of social interaction with other players. bungie took the stance hey, if you wanna do raids, you have to talk to each other. Yet they did nothing to facilitate the ease of that. They need to hire someone from a successful mmo to see how those mmos get players to interact with each other, the environment, and explore. you can't just expect players to talk to each other, you have to facilitate or else a lot of people won't do it. 3. no questing, lore, npc interactions. so what you have is a great shooter with great graphics/audio, bland story 1 player, good multiplayer, and a co op mode. bungie promised the world, and fell short, hence the overly harsh reviews. if there was no hype about this game, the score would be a 7 or 8, probably a 7, but for this game to be considered a success, its needs to be a 9 or 10 due to the amount invested in it. Bungie needs to get people invested in the Destiny Universe and is failing to do so. Most people can't recall much of the story, and don't see a reason to do something about the traveler. They are not invested emotionally in their own characters or the universe. This game is running off of its multiplayer, and keeping loot whores around (the reason i still play, is im a loot whore) but that will only carry a player so long to keep playing.

                      • Enh. They're not far off. It was billed as 'visionary', a real game-changer, with a deep, epic story. It failed hard at that by basically being a lobby-shooter with a half-dozen map horde mode grinding endlessly for gear (the WORST thing you could possibly steal from MMOs), which is probably pipping them a point. Without that point lost, I'd agree it's a 7 game. Short, overly reliant on grind, terrible, terrible delivery of narrative, which is itself confused, which overall would condemn it to the reject pile if it wasn't for the gorgeous visuals and pure fun of pulling the trigger. But those things alone cannot sustain a game or we'd all be utterly enchanted by Call of Duty's training paper-target shoot course. People want motivations to shoot things, to be moved. Precious little of that exists in Destiny. If they can patch that in somehow (I'm skeptical they can fix that with cheaper, smaller DLC when they couldn't even do it for the main game), I guess maybe reviews might go up a point? Maybe two.

It's almost as if all game reviewers are corrupt and biased *COUGH COUGH* Zoe Quinn *COUGH COUGH* Don't let the reviewers get you down, we're enjoying the story and gameplay of the game. We, as gamers, can appreciate the games that we take joy in playing: unlike people whose job it is to play games, and write half-arsed reviews whose ratings depend on which company is paying them the most.

                      • The real question is: why do you give a -blam!-? If you're enjoying your experience with the game that's all that matters. Let the haters hate. You don't have to defend this game or why you like it. Just sit back and relax. The people who simply do not enjoy it will inevitably trade it in or sell it and never buy a Bungie product again. And, in all honesty, more power to them. They have every right as a consumer to be disappointed with their purchase the same as you being happy with yours.
