Lack of story? absolutely not.

I have seen videos of critics, and read comments of how Destiny has a shallow story, and it's aggravating to say the least. Destiny has a rich story with tons of lore waiting to come. Think of it as a tv show. Bungie is releasing bits of the story little by little over time to keep the game exiting. The game has only been out for not even a week so chill out. I know many people are withdrawing off the story. Hungry for answers on what's going on. Believe me I'm one of them, but there is tons of other stuff to do as well to satisfy you until they release the next bit of story. Guys we haven't even scratched the surface of this amazing game so stop wanting to much. Bungie is giving us a inch to keep us guessing, and are doing so over time to keep you coming to the game. Most of you are wanting to take a mile. In the previous halo games you only have a fixed amount of missions that span about 9 hours of completion. After that the only thing to do is grind out in the amazing multiplayer for a year. But Destiny is different. And you have to have a open mind and understand this new and awesome way of releasing story content. For instance they're is gonna be a story event later in September. Plus many other events that include weekly, and daily ones to look forward too. I'm certainly not looking forward to spoil myself to the whole story in the first week of this games life span, and you should too.

  • Oh there's tons of lore and a great story line in the universe of Destiny. Just not in the game. That's what people are, very validly, complaining about.

    • Living in denial. The story is lacking and the little bit that does exist is garbage. Terrible writers and game implementation.

    • If this was a tv show and this is the pilot episode it would've been taken off air and cancelled. Nothing's going on to care two shits about. I agree with the critics. Most of this games lore is locked up in those dumbass grimore things. But why should I be forced to go look at some card on a website instead of it being in the game. And secondly if this were to be a tv show how awesome would it be to watch the cast literally do the same thing every episode before it gets old?

      • New and awesome way. What a load of rubbish. I don't have to imagine it being good - it has to be good and affect me that way. Destiny does not. Shallow unexplained and boring. Stretch the story out as long as you like and only the MMO fans will follow. Fail. I like a good movie and am happy to see good follow up versions. This story is boring. Nuff said. Halo it is NOT despite any flaws that game had it was way more interesting than this crap. Give me a bone not a bloody tooth pick....... Rubbish.

        • SPOILER - DO NOT FOLLOW THE LINK BELOW IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE STORY Tetra Ninja has compiled the cutscenes from the entire release into a 28 minute movie (accidentally has the moon in twice - (athough I think the game does run the same scene twice). I personally can't see how this "story" works well at all. Potential? Yes. The execution is really poor as a release product. Unlike a lot of peoples opinions, i like Dink as the ghost voice.. He is supposed to sound robotic... I think that some of the problem with the story telling is that a lot of the dialogue for the story is during the gameplay... It is hard to pay attention to what the ghost is saying when you are concentrating on killing the knight that is chasing you, plus the constant gun fire... And sometimes a fireteam member talking during the clips. So it ends up just sounding like random sentences that make no sense and leave u asking, WTF?!? I wonder if you took all of the dialogue and listened to it in order, while doing a mindless action (i.e. Running), would improve the story telling. Like in the first intro level the ghost didnt really talk much while fighting and it felt like a more immersive story.. It was easier to follow. In games like Battlefield or CoD the plot points are NOT during the fighting... And those stories are super easy to feel "a part of" and follow... Anyone else agree? ?? #Feedback

When I first beat the game several days back I thought "hmm, story was non existent." However, after collecting all the Dead Ghosts I can assure you (those who think the story is barren) that the universe is actually quite detailed. Just get out and find the dead ghosts and you will have all the gaps filled that are likely on your mind. The more I think about it, I like it this way. It reminds me of old school games which I have missed so very much in that it doesn't hold the players hand and forces them to get off their asses and: 1) Work for their loot 2) Figure out this/that with the story from small bits and details the player must go out and find Unfortunately, as we all know, the carebear fail players will wear them down and loot/everything else will be handed out like candy canes but until then at least we can enjoy the more "work for your keep" situation. Those of us who enjoy that, that is, which I have a feeling is not just myself.

          • Its not that the potential is not there. It is and I have faith that it will come. But the story in this prologue is NOT well told. This game has a lot to recommend it and I really like it. The story as it is told here, IMHO, sucks rocks and was a HUGE disappointment. Glad you enjoyed it but I guess I set my bar higher, especially given what Bungie is capable of.

Ohhhh Ok I just spent $125 for the first chapter of a story. Makes perfect sense now. Thank you so much for explaining it to me. I was so wrong to think that there was no story.

              • They gave us the blurb you read on the back of a book. The writing quality and the amount of content we have been provided on release is pathetic. Bungie should be ashamed of themselves for this inexcusable example of unprofessional design choices being implemented just to get a game out the door.

                • Thats the problem, we are waiting for the lore of the story and are just given tidbits in the form of Grimmore Cards. People aren't wanting to much at all, they just want the story to be better conveyed to them. We don't want to look at Grimmore Cards on our phones/tablets/computers that talk about certain points in the story that we just completed in the game. What we all want is for the story to be conveyed meaningfully. I'm sure Destiny is full of lots of lore and storys that will be told in the future, how that story is conveyed in further dlc is a mystery and I for one am not satisfied with how the story was conveyed in Destiny. And don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the more engaging parts of the story, and I enjoy the game as a whole, I just feel like more could have been done, especially by Bunge - the people who made Halo as popular as it is. The game has incredible scope, but the story is just lacking when compared with other aspects of the game. I mean look at this game and all of its characters, enemies and factions. The story of this game could have been amazing. I can understand that Destiny is a game with a long lifespan and a persistand world, but I just think they could have done so so much better with what they had.

                  • Also, the grimoire cards are another way of Bungie leaking information about Destiny. People are complaining that the facts and stuff should be in the game. But you'd then get bored cause there would be a lot more cutscenes and probably less action. Crucible and Strikes aren't just there for killing time. You get gear, grimoire cards, and things leading up to gear. Destiny isn't meant to be simple or straight-forward. It makes you curious and longing for more. Doesn't mean you'll get everything in the first week though.

                  • Bungie releasing the story pieces at a time is no excuse for poor story telling. I dont mind the length of the story as things stand. What bothers me is that the story we have so far is forgettable and repetitive.

                  • Thank you for saying that. Too many people keep judging Destiny badly for such unimportant reasons, the story used as one of them. The whole plot, to me anyway, is all about the Guardians that fight to hold back the Darkness. We have many enemies that seek to destroy us for reasons being either to just wanting to destroy us or we get in their way, example being the military bound Cabal. When you fight multiple types of differing enemies your going to end up doing a variety of things to stop them rather then follow a linear path like in some games. We're fighting a war that we came close to losing and we're only now beginning to push back. To take back what we lost. It's going to be a long ways till we reach a conclusion. At least I hope so.

                  • I think the criticism is not that they story isn't good (which it is if you read the grimoire cards) it's just that it wasn't presented very well within the game. I think that's a valid complaint as I think the story is quite good.

                  • The story is on the same level of coherence and engagement as FF13. Its just dudes in mono tone voices spewing out expository dialog with alien terms with no outside context or meaning. Shallow writing with the only person of getting the player from point A to B. The worst part about it is you cant skip some of the cutscenes. Glad to see Bungie taken inspiration from the weaker Final Fantasy games. Way tah goo. 500 million dollars lul.

                  • I suppose it's there. But reading cards to obtain it just feels disjointed. It's like reading a book, but having to refer to another book to get the actual background of a story for anything to make sense. It's just not smooth. I wish they would've focused more on delivering a story first than the co op or pvp. But I get it. The things that Destiny does right will keep me coming back and I believe this IP has more potential than any other FPS we have available to us now and in the future.

The game is Quantum Break if you were wondering. You're decisions in the game and how you play influence the TV show that will be airing after the game releases and the show will influence the next chapter of the game itself. Sounds cool if you ask me.

                        • I can't understand why so many people are hammering on about the lack of a story. Those who ignore the media maelstrom and take time to look, listen, feel and soak in what's going on in the game will bask in a deep sense of rich ancient lore, great loss, sacrifice and desperate hope. There is no way that Bungie could offer a hand-holding 'complete guide to the history of Destiny' in one instalment. I'm sure many questions will be answered in time. It's no different in fact to the mighty George Lucas deciding that the Star Wars story needed to begin at part IV back in the 1970's. (And yes parts 1-3 were already written at the time) Why? Because the whole story was too complex and too long to tell at one sitting and do it any justice. Destiny has a similar sense of depth and I look forward to future instalments. Meantime I can use my own intellect and imagination to sense the millennia of wars that have both scarred and shaped these lands.
