i hit lvl 20 and now I dont see a progression bar, how do I get to 21?

Collect motes of light and just get better gear. Your level will go up accordingly to your stats based on gear.

Collecting loot that has light on it. Hover your selection icon over your level number and it'll tell you there how much more you need, etc.
