Centipede University Connection Issue

After installing the game twice and thoroughly testing my connection I have deduced that if you are getting the centipede error code like I am that Bungie has not adjusted for University hubs or server connection. No one on my floor can play and are getting the same error code. My brother is not at University and is getting the Cattle error. I'm not sure what is going on but I hope these issues are resolved as soon as possible because I'm already weary of this purchase. I love Bungie but mass server issues and error codes on the first night sends a bad message. Furthermore there is no support to assist. I will see what happens tomorrow but my guess is that these issues will not be fully resolved any time soon. It also seems odd that one specific code is designed for University hub/server errors. Who else are having these issues? What is happening elsewhere?

  • I have finally been able to play Destiny with no issues! I had to use a hotspot and a vpn, but the game is running smoothly with no issues.

    • Email from JMU help desk: "Thanks for providing us with that information. I apologize for the inconvenience; this is, however, typical of new game releases. JMU uses a traffic shaper that identifies and sorts traffic into categories and provides defined bandwidth based upon those categories. When a game updates, or a new game is released, our traffic shaper does not recognize the traffic. Typically, the traffic shaper company releases an update soon after, and the gaming traffic is once again recognizable. There is no guarantee that games on our network will work. For our official policies on game systems in the dorms, please see http://www.jmu.edu/computing/helpdesk/selfhelp/gaming.shtml. Please let me know if you have additional questions. Thanks!"

      • Just want to let all Kent State students on here know that Bungie finally emailed me back. Here's the email: Hi Michael, Thanks for replying back to us about this issue. Would you be willing to share some information for us to get started? · Can you give specific details of when you’re seeing the “centipede” error? o While the game is loading, or after you’re in a mission? o Do you get the error every time you play or do something, or does it happen sporadically? Thanks for answering these questions. Once we have this info, we can move ahead with troubleshooting or getting in contact with your campus IT department. Thanks! -Nick I responded letting them know It never gets past the title screen and that it happens every time. If I get any more news I'll be sure to update you all.

1:50pm at Kent State still suffering from the centipede on Day 3. At least tech support has told us they are working towards a solution and not just throwing us under the bus. Really anxious to play.

                • A long email just went out to TN Tech students who've contacted them about the issue, basically saying that blocked ports shouldn't be an issue in the residence halls and:
The other issue is that the game uses peer to peer networking for gaming connections instead of relying on a traditional centralized game server network. This causes problems because most managed Internet providers block peer to peer networking as part of their due diligence to prevent piracy. The connection types that are used also require some specialized settings that may not function in locations that use network address translation (NAT) and prevents the use of more than one gaming console per IP address. Bungie has acknowledged the issues and is currently working on solutions, but they have not announced any timeline for a solution or patch at this time. Rather than wait for the manufacturer to address the issue, We have been researching the issue and collecting data on the network traffic used by this game. If it is possible to get the game functioning without significantly impacting the security of our campus network, we will do what we can to get the game functioning. We have a few theories that we will be testing starting this morning to see if they can get the game up and running. I will update all of you with new information as it becomes available.
• I'm a student at the University of Mississippi, and I've contacted the IT Department and this is the message I got back. "The Destiny servers use the same ports that P2P file sharing programs use. These ports are blocked for a reason, to prevent users using the Ole Miss network to pirate software or other copyrighted material. While I'm sure the networking team is looking into a solution, we have no ETA for a fix." So, I guess we're just going to have to patiently wait for a fix. I was able to play it on release day, but the following day I joined clan centipede...help us Bungie. You're our only hope. Fingers crossed. Good luck everyone!

                            • To those who live in COPPER BEECH TOWN HOMES/ APARTMENT COMPLEXES ON OR NEAR COLLEGE CAMPUSES- I spoke to Copper Beech's IT department today asking about the issue. According to a nice fellow named Corey, they have received several complaints and are already in the process of altering their packets to allow for students who reside in their complexes to play Destiny! The issue is p2p related and they are well aware of the ports offered up by Bungie (Which they can't use due to security reasons as you all already know). Their technicians are in the process of a bypass but it may take a few days or longer unfortunately. (They could not give me an ETA). So if you are one of the many like myself who are just off campus (GVSU- go Lakers) in Copper Beech, just grip something tightly and be as patient as you can lol, YOUR DESTINY AWAITS BRO!

                                  • I'm curious, has anyone here at a college talked to their IT departments and was able to get a fix? If so, do you have any idea what they did. I've emailed my IT department several times and told them how to open the ports in order to fix the problem, and they've said it's more complicated than that. I'm 98% positive that it really is not more complicated than that, but I'd like to make sure.

From TnTech IT "Good morning. Thank you all for lettings us know about the release of Destiny and the ports needed to allow you to successfully play. This has been referred to our Networking team so that they can open those ports. We will send you another email as soon as we are told the ports are clear. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused, but we hope to have it resolved for you quickly!" I want to think everyone here who emailed them. Because of the replies on here I contacted them, and got a few others too as well. I've never gotten a response like this from them so I hope it's good news! Good Luck to everyone!
