From what I have read the servers will go live at 12am PST on the 9th. I have not seen an Official Bungie source confirm this, but I have seen several commenters state that this is what they have heard.

If there is a midnight launch itll be playable. Diablo 3 is the only game i remember where you could buy and not play and guess what they cancelled the midnight launches.
