He's looking to take a break and to try new challenges, if he created the Mass Effect universe i expect greater things coming from him.
Still he was always excited for every Mass Effect game, its kinda hard to picture the franchise without him. We'll see.

He pretty much created the universe and was the major figure in developing the first Mass Effect... then Mac Walters came into the picture

Indeed. It's kind of a shame that he'll mostly be remembered for screwing up ME3's ending, he's done some great stuff otherwise.
