I know we're living in a post apocalyptic world, but I think there should be books. It would be awesome if occasionally loot contains a book which allows us to read a brief bit of lore about the Destiny world.

It's called Grimoire.

There should definitely be a tower library full of books, or maybe hard light lexicons. I'm sure the warlocks would want to amass and share as much knowledge as possible. maybe every now and then, pulling a book from a shelf knocks loose some sort of drop, which would usually be dust or some sort of fodder, but maybe spare glimmer. It could even be a plot point, just imagine: "What the hell was that?" "Something old, and very dangerous... Let's check the archives."

Grimoire cards.

Wow... Thanks for making "Books" the highest rated. Who knew that so many Guardians loved literature?
-
I'm surprised there isn't already a book about this. Would love to read more about the background stuff. The lore, the life of the characters we see in the tower, etc.

Original post by WalkerBohh So I saw this and thought it was really cool the warlocks could have some of those books I've come up with this concept from the several references to "The Archives" that warlocks apparently spend years in doing research, and it's pretty simple, each class has its own area in the city that isn't "warlock/titan/hunter only" but has the respective guardian's feel to it. First, my favorite class, the warlocks, who have the archives, an expansive, labyrinthian library filled with tomes from the golden age, mysterious artifacts recovered from our enemies and the compiled knowledge newly gained about the world beyond the wall that is always changing. Players would be able to go to the Archives to read their grimoirs with 3d models of enemies, weapons, armor, etc. It is here that Warlocks study ceaselessly the mysterious power of Light so that they may bend it in new ways, the lore of our enemies so that we may find new weaknesses in their strategy, and even the Traveler itself, so that we may help it in any way we can. It is also here that the brightest minds are chosen to be Warlock Mentors, those who have made an unprecedented discovery that not only helps the Warlock Order, but the city as a whole. Next, the apparent community favorite, the Hunters, who perch in the Wolf's Den, a structure built into the Wall itself, and where citizens of the city are trained to become expert marksmen to defend the city from direct attack while the main guardian force pushes the Darkness back. The Den houses a fully loaded Holo-Range, with full enemy specs so that users can practice against fully realized enemy holograms. Similar to the War Room from X-Men, but less forgiving for guardians, since we can't die, the holograms are fully lethal. This will allow guardians to get the hang of their newest toys. This is also where the deadliest and most steadfast of Hunters attempt The Trial by Fire. One Hunter most stand alone against the deadliest of our cataloged enemies; Fallen Archons and Servitors, Cabal Warlords, long dead Gods of the Hive, and Vex War Constructs in a hellish gauntlet that few have dared to face, and even less have achieved victory. The current Hunter Mentor has held his post for almost a century. And lastly, the Titans, who test their mettle in the Proving Grounds, an arena modeled after the coliseum of the ancient world. Originally the Proving Grounds was an arena where titans pitted their strength against one another to see who was the fiersest warrior fit to lead all others. Now the Proving Grounds are used to show who amongst all guardians is the strongest, or even just to settle disputes of reputation and honor. (Basically it's a 1v1 dueling arena) It was here that Lord Shaxx gained not only the privilege of overseeing the founding of the Crucible, but the right to stand tall and proud at its doors, and even Lord Saladin himself is challenged from time to time, though no one has ever been able to feed him defeat, not even once. The Crucible was even modeled after the Proving Grounds. Every Titan mentor since the collapse has been chosen here so that only the strongest, bravest, and most unrelenting Titans may mold their pupils into tireless walls of metal and flesh. So that's my idea for the 3 class areas. They would be accessible from the tower via the dock that ships regularly land on just behind the spawning area. This would give the city more flavor, and show that every guardian has a place to call their own besides the tower and give Destiny a feeling of life.

Well it wouldn't be out of the question... The guardian mentors keep books on their shelf in the war room, and the speaker has a bookshelf with quite a collection on it as well.
-
Or we could have terraria-style magic spell books
-
Finding deactivated ghosts and getting grimmor cards does the same thing that you are talking about.
-
books? books?!?!? in a few hundred years I'm sure all info would be sent directly to your eyeballs! besides, haven't the guardians heard of tablets or smartphones? come to think of it, why are there shops in the tower and a postmaster when you could have 3D printers make this stuff for you using your own portable printer, and messages could be downloaded to your personal brain? the future - it's so 1995! :D
-
This isn't TES! Destiny will only have LIGHT novels! Hue hue hue hue
-
Yeas or like Holobooks! That you can read documentations and history of the golden age!
-
That could be sweet actually. Take a page from fable. When you find certain books, you unlock different gestures.
-
NO...! I've had a problem ever since I found a skill book in skyrim, I don't want to make the game longer than it should be by reading every book. But yes if they don't do anything like give you glimmer or get you a special objective
-
Make the title books and beards and suggest that we need them!
-
That would be discriminating against the large number of Destiny fans which seems to be illiterate. (Any spelling mistakes supplied by the gods of irony)
-
hey this is the digital age we don't need no stinking books. ;)
-
ES type books yes.
-
I'm game..

In Bungie's Destiny, we see and hear the lore all around us bit by bit and explore and learn the secrets of our past as the story unfolds. The Grimoire cards do provide that, but individual texts that shed more light on the world would usually go into a codex, which the grimoire replaces. There's also the fact that in a co-operative game like Destiny plans to be, stopping everything to read a short story might not really jive with the pace the game provides. If you're riding solo and want to head back to the tower, sit down on a couch in the bar and read up on the biography of Lord Saladin, or the recent history of the Future War Cult, that could be cool. I'd rather do it in my Grimoire than in a book I got as loot... because that takes up a gear/ equipment slot... and I don't have the vault space for that.
-
Maybe that's what the grimoire is meant to be? Hopefully they'll either add those as drops or expand it a touch. I think it would be cool. That, and finding some reading material out on the frontier would be awesome. Hell, notes from the hunters that have been out there, a journal from someone who was defending against the Darkness during the end of the Golden Age, notes from people within the city or some innocent notes left of some scrapped computer in one of those downed jets in Old Russia.

I was pawing at the book case by the Vanguards. Skyrim has left its mark on many.
-
Bump!
-
I would like some real books actually. Since the enemies in the game have no personality I was hoping I would have a reason to want to kill the guys I'm shooting at.

Edited by Davisteph: 8/4/2014 5:13:08 AMGrimoire cards seem to be what your talking about. Edit: Sorry, I see others have already given the same answer.

Maybe there could at least be some hidden audio logs.
