Universal Communication (draft)

I was thinking that what those of us who don't want to play with mics and listen to 12 year olds need to have a system of communication in place so that we can all effectively communicate with each other between battles, such as after a part of the strike segment. I don't know about you, but I have a bladder and it gets full on occasion. So there should obviously be some system in place where you can let people know if you are ready to move on or not. This is a draft, if I get some ideas that I like I will put them into the final draft of communication codes. Some obviously important ones. 1) 'Wait a minute, I'll be right back': This is probably the most significant one, but I could be wrong. How do I let my teammates know I will be returning really soon instead of leaving for 20 minutes, because some people are inconsiderate, and can be counted on to do such things? Do I want to wait for this person to come back, or leave him behind, without knowing how long they will be gone. I'm thinking that the gesture/code for 'be right back' should be 'wave, then sit'. 2) 'I'm ready to move on': The opposite of the last one, this can be inferred by your teammates just running ahead. But if everyone wants to make sure their teammates are ready to follow behind them like a real team should, perhaps you could all signal each other to be sure that they are ready to move on so that you do not run into a boss battle by yourself and get pulverized. I'm thinking this gesture/code should be 'wave, then point', either pointing in the direction of your teammate or the objective. 3) Join my Fireteam/Invite me to your fire team: This is straight forward but I'm unsure if this should be one single gesture or two gestures. One is simpler, but then who is doing the invite? You or them? So I think that 'I'll invite you' should be 'wave, then dance' and 'you invite me' should be 'wave, then dance, then point'. Basically, 'wave and dance' being an invite to play together, and pointing indicating that you want them to add you to their fire team. 'Yes' could be either an invite to their Fireteam or a 'point and wave'. I suppose you could just try to add them and see if it works, but it is more considerate to ask first to not annoy people. I'm sure there will be people who will try to add anyone and everyone, but I don't necessarily want to play with just anyone so this could save the annoyance. The reason I am making the codes be two/three gestures long is so that people do not get the wrong idea if you just point or dance or wave or sit. A wave or a dance by themselves to not necessarily mean you want to communicate with each other. I suppose some communication could be done by using the analog sticks to nod or shake your characters head, but that only works for simpler conversation. What I am trying to do here is establish a few guidelines to help with more complex communication. If there are any that you think I am missing, please comment on this topic and if I like the idea I will include it in my final draft. I'm also hoping that people don't suddenly make a flurry of new posts on the topic, the goal is to have a set of universal codes for simple communication. It would deplete the purpose to have 50 different set of codes where nobody knows more than 1 or 2 of them. If I am lucky, this will be adopted and perhaps even built upon when the final game comes out. Thanks for reading and don't forget to share your ideas for my final draft. For the poll, let me know if you like the idea or not.

  • *Update* Alright, so it has been officially confirmed that no major changes will be made to Destiny. So proximity chat, text chat and general chat, being major changes, are almost certainly out of the question. This leaves the question of how to communicate with strangers. I think these three commands are the solution that we need. I'm ready: up, left (wave, point) Wait a minute: up, down (wave, sit) Play with me: up, right (wave, dance) Realistically, these are the three major messages you are going to need to play Destiny with strangers. While it may seem true that you could just add someone directly to your fireteam, it is also true that you may want to play with them first to see if they have what it takes. Or you may prefer to not add them to your fireteam at all. Maybe you want to play a strike with a stranger and you don't plan on seeing them again. You will still need to be able to communicate to them when to wait or when you are ready. Otherwise, they may run ahead and get killed or do something fun while you are using the bathroom. Or worse, you might wind up waiting for someone who walked away from their console. Neither is ideal. Communication is vital, even amongst strangers.

      • I'm for cross game chat and should be enabled when your in proximity of players otherwise it should go mute. If your in a party then the game should let you chat no matter where your at. You should be able to set parties within the game and not go home then party chat option. And if you join a random fireteam you should automatically be placed within party chat within the game and not from the main option.

I have an idea. Send them a message. Also, if you try to do too many gestures at the same time it will do them, but it will not show up in the little gesture/killfeed log.

            • This is a decent idea, except for the fact that 1. you are assuming everyone is waching each other all the time 2. if some one is just doing gestures for the hell of it, 3. people just not knowing what is the universal body language, or not remebering it fully if they do. All these commands should just be in a set text chat. Sort of like BF4s comma rose. With set phrases, that pop up on the screen.

It has been pointed out to me that some people think this is too complicated or difficult to remember. I would like to point out that this may seem to be the case, but only because I went into depth explaining everything. I'd like to fix this illusion by clarifying the proposed control inputs for each message. I'm ready: up, left Wait a minute: up, down Play with me: up, right You shouldn't have difficulty remembering which is which because each emote has it's own vibe. In this case, wave is to get your teammates attention, point is to get attention to something else (or move on), dance is to play (or celebrate), sit is to wait. So, for example, 'wave then sit' means 'attention teammate, wait' IF PEOPLE COULD REMEMBER THE GTA SAN ANDREAS CHEAT CODES, THEY CAN REMEMBER THIS http://www.gtasanandreas.net/cheats/ps2.php

                • *Update* Alright, thank you to everyone who has voted or commented (and, of course, to everyone who will do so in the future). Firstly, I am thinking about removing the fourth message, the one that is asking the other person to invite you. While it is polite, it doesn't seem as necessary as the others. To anyone who reads this, let me know what you think. Without that message, the remaining message signals would be as follows: I'm ready: up, left (wave, point) Wait a minute: up, down (wave, sit) Play with me: up, right (wave, dance) From the way the vote has turned out so far, it seems like most people do like this idea so I will eventually make an updated, simplified version of this thread with no poll. I will just write the basic premise and what the gestures are for each message. For anyone who wants an elaboration into my thought processes, I will provide a link to this thread or they can comment and ask me.

All good ideas but it would be much simpler if you were to just join a clan or team that only has mature gamers such as mine for instance we only allow members 21+ in so that solves almost every problem there. You just have to find a good community to join.

                      • Seems redundant, there won't be enough who would bother with stuff like this. Personally if I'm messing around running a Strike and you refuse to join my fire team with a mic I'm just going to ignore you and move on regardless of any emotes someone is doing around me. For most people the universal sign that you don't want to communicate is to not join a group and throwing on your mic.

All this trouble when you can simply voice chat! And if there 12 year old winers why would you choose any form of communication? Thats what mutes for.All this seems WAY to much. Ok what about PvP you can't call out against my team i feel for you.Going against a team like mine your going to be spawn traped and demolished before you can blink a eye.Communication through voice chat is as vital to PvP gameplay as having a controller.I really feel for any team not in a fireteam going against my FPS veterans were going to make PvP NO FUN AT ALL FOR TEAMS WITHOUT COMMUNICATION *** BY THE WAY EVERY PlayStation 4 and X-Box one COMES WITH A MIC. *** ***Posted a link to my topic at top that goes into more detail about COMMUNICATION come join the debate***
