It takes less than a minute to send a friend invite, or a request to join a clan. All you have to do is make a decent first impression during a strike, crucible, or mission.
But that's sort of the whole point. Bungie are suggesting that the raid needs 'friends'; dedicated people who put in the 'investment' and 'coordination' required to succeed. If you're telling me to add random people in-game, how are these random people my 'friends'? How am I to know they are 'coordinated' and 'invested'? I am not to know, and the idea that a 'friend' is more 'coordinated' and 'invested' in a game than somebody who is not a 'friend' is not even logical. A good player is a good player whether they're your friend or not. :/ If you're adding random people, online, in-game, whatever, just to attempt the raid, how is that any different from matchmaking? It isn't. You'd just be joining random people in the same way. That's why none of this makes sense. Whatever Bungie wanted out of this, it certainly has not gone their way. We aren't going to have countless groups of coordinated clans comprised of deep friendships and tactical greatness, and gracious groups of 'coordinated' 'friends' attempting this. We've just ended up matchmaking online with a bunch of randoms, called them clans, added them to our friends list, and are waiting until September. It's madness. :/

If your not actively looking for random people to make friends with while lvling so u can raid. Ten why the hell should u be placed in a raid by Bungie? You guys keep using the "what's the difference if I invite 5 people, versus Bungie telling me who I should play with?" If you truly cannot tell the difference in matchmaking and inviting someone you played with before then your just being ignorant intentionally. Raids are not for lazy people who can't even muster up a group on their own. Why don't we just let Bungie beat the raid for us, post a video of it so its easy sauce for everybody.

We are answering that question. It's been answered multiple times. There is a world of difference not only in the quality of the team, but in the feel of the raid when it requires setup to get started. The Raid itself is a symbol in the game: "THIS is the ultimate challenge." To maintain that effect, Bungie has taken steps to remove certain factors that are guaranteed to bring it down. For example, Matchmaking. When Matchmaking is implemented, the feel of the entire raid changes to a chore with no consequences and no need to prepare. As a result, the idea of the raid even when not participating becomes less awe-inspiring. And then, you have the immediate decline of the raid from being something cool and challenging to being a grind and a chore. (This is an observable effect and can be seen across multiple previous games, WoW being the most recent and large scale example.)
