I would like to see some penalisation to dieing, but not a permadeath. I was thinking more along lines of skill progression penalties, like you use to get in some RPGs where exp was knocked off you along with resources. In this case all your skill advancements that aren't locked in and upgraded yet.

It's a risky way of designing games when you ramp up ways and to punish players for mistakes. We play games to win and people like to win all the time.
