I really loved the idea of being able to purchase ammo packs and use them during play. Toiling away against the enemy but not being able to grab any of the ammo defeated foes drop, the ammo packs provide a great alternative. Especially the heavy ammo and special ammo, as you never know when you'll come across a tougher enemy and need to whip out that rocket launch or machine gun, only to find the gun empty.
In saying that, I wasn't a fan of having to open the character screen, flick over another screen, find the consumable, and then hold the use button to apply it. I get what Bungie is trying to achieve, making the world feel like a living breathing environment in real time. Though with small items like ammo packs or even the experience plus items, it seems more realistic to assign one to a hot button or combination of buttons.
I'm not sure how this could be achieved as all the buttons seem to be assigned to actions already. My suggestion, due to ease of implementation across all consoles, would be holding a button and pressing another, plus solves any accidental item usage.
I am unsure how it would work on an Xbox or Playstation 3, but swiping on the Playstation 4 touch pad could work. This could even open up to 4 ‘slots’ as swiping left, right, up, and down could all be assigned to an item, or even hot swapping guns in inventory e.g. Swiping left and right cycles through Secondary weapons.
The other option could be including the ability to use consumables on the smartphone app. Having the app open and connected at all times, within easy reach, would still be easier to tap than going through the in-game menu screens.
Does anyone have thoughts, ideas, or suggestions? Would this be a popular inclusion? Or should using consumables be left the way they are?
