When we first saw this mysterious guardian in the very first mission I though that she would help us later on. However, later on during the first moon mission we see her face and because of the cloak I'm guessing she was a hunter. In the scene that we see her she seems more like a ominous threat. Why else would she let us to fend off the hive horde alone.
My theory is she used to be a guardian like us but then her ghost died, and she went rogue trying to steal other guardians light, and become the traveler's worst enemy yet.
I don't know but I wanna know. any thoughts, theories.

I could tell you… but I don't have time to explain why I don't have time to explain. But just so you know, everything changed when the fire nation attacked.

This information is my theory but I think she is a fallen from the future. Who has seen the mistakes she and her comrades have committed. She has formed a group and has traveled to the past to help the guardians take back earth from the fallen. The clue that gave this info to me is that she called the ghost little light which seemed odd it's like she knew it and had seen one before.

Operating under the assumption that Exos are ageless and only die from getting killed. The stranger is the last surviving Guardian of the Golden age, the only thing that was actually THERE when the Darkness came, she fought and survived in the wild, away from the devastation that the Darkness brought. Even the speaker doesn't know the details of the collapse. The reason this Guardian has no ghost is that she never died and resurrected like the rest.

I don't know but she could be something that dose not really exist and you guardian is seeing things.

One of Eris' companions
-
She never had a ghost, when your ghost notices she doesn't have one she even says "I was not forged in the light"
-
I always just thought she was one of the Nine.

Shes not a guardian, shes from the future, she doesn't time to explain why she doesn't have time to explain.

Samus.

She said she wasn't a guardian and wasn't born in light. My money is on she is from the future and came back in time with Rasputin.

Well from the multiple responses and theories, plus my own experience in the game, it seems as if she is neither here or there. She has this "Enemy of my enemy is my friend" vibe going for her. When you first see her when you get the ship, it is possible she gave it to you. When you see her again on the moon, while looking for the missing guardian, she randomly appears then your character looks away then looks back and she's gone. Which means she is either assessing you or in some way guiding you, or both. When she finally appears to you on Venus, for me as an exo warlock, she was also exo, but hunter. She kept calling my Ghost a "little light" and even admits that she is NOT of the light, explaining why she has no ghost and looks like a hunter with a Fallen weapon and can teleport like the Vex. During the entire interaction she is talking to someone on a com-link about you and about some kind of battle then teleports. I am just now on Mars and can't wait to see what unfolds but not getting my hopes up. This could be the beginning of the beginning lol. Anyone who has played the entire story mission out knows there is more to it, given that Bungie won't charge for them since they are already on the game disc and is therefore illegal. Hopefully there will be more answers to the questions.

I think she is an Exo from the future based on her gun description. She might get her power from Rasputin or some other Warmind. That would help explain the communications we overhear and the battle that was mentioned.

If you were to read her Grimoir card, it states this;
"Stories of an Exo who walks in the Darkness without a Ghost have long haunted the Tower. Legends say this anomaly dissolves in and out of the world, intangible and elusive, as if she is a visitor from somewhere beyond."
meaning she is some form of a physical appearence, however she was not forged in light. The card then goes on to state;
"Some believe she's the last of an ancient Exo squadron, fighting a long-forgotten war. Others dismiss her as a hallucination caused by exposure to Vex technology. But there are those who maintain that her intervention saved their lives - or averted unspeakable catastrophes."
And the gun she has is called the
Stranger's Rifle
and it's description says that
It has parts that should not exist yet
meaning that she
might be from a time in the future
which would explain her intervention on the Moon, Venus, and her watching your Guardian from a distance calling you "interesting, but not entirely interesting." Hope this helped... and the Spoilers are there for a reason.

She was never forged in light (she never had a ghost and she's not a guardian) maybe she was being built, her memory got corrupted and she got out of where ever she was being made and set out to guide guardians

cortana after halo 4 haha

It's Angelina Jolie
-
She's a plot element designed to move the story forward, the story being non existent, I assume they haven't even thought out her actual role

Well for one, she is not a Guardian. She was not given the power of the Traveler's light. However, this is what I think she is. Call me dumb, but I think he is a personified version of the Guardians' fates. She pushes you through things. She makes you go to Venus, and she made you go to the Black Garden. At the end, she disappears, never to be seen again. Meaning that the Guardian now has full control over what they do next. Which could also mean that Guardians are puppets, and this Stranger is the puller of the strings. You go through the game questioning nothing. Why are there murderous robots? Why aren't you surprised you came back to life? Why was your Ghost looking for you? Why do I have to go to Venus? Why should I go to the Black Garden? Why am I fighting the Darkness? Who are the Darkness? Is it the Traveler's evil twin? You question nothing. You are given orders, you follow them. You have no control on how things will end. You can do the same strikes or missions 500 times and they will always end the same

I don't even have time to explain why I don't have time to explain

She's not a guardian at all and never was one. The story (which most people say doesn't exist) tells you specifically that in one of the cutscenes.
