Someone apparently needs to look up an internet dictionary and look up "MMO" in it so they understand what kind of game Destiny is.

I know what an MMO is pal, but it seems to me that someone needs to look up what type of game Destiny is, because it isn't an MMO.
-
What part of it isn't an MMO? Tell me that? It has every aspect of an MMO
-
But if it isn't an MMO like Bungie are saying, then it isn't an MMO. Bungie are in control of what type of game it is and if Bungie say it isn't an MMO then it can't be an MMO.
-
They are saying it's not an mmo because it scares casuals away... But it is an mmo.

Bungie classifies it as a "shared world shooter". That's pretty much a refined way of saying "Oh, hey, here's a new MMO, have fun with it. Courtesy of Bungie!

Edited by chronxski: 7/25/2014 1:47:33 PMThe thing is there is twelve people to a server (not counting the tower). An MMO would have MUCH more than twelve people in a server. That's why bungie is classifying it as a "shared world shooter", it's because they want to implement cooperative play, but not make it a generic MMO. Personally I would classify Destiny into its own genre, because there's not really anything out there to classify it currently.

Actually, no. An MMO is not a genre. It's a classification for a game that hosts thousands of players at the same time on various servers, which Destiny does. Technically, by all aspects of the game, it is a MMO, but since the MMORPG genre is plagued with games like WoW or some other P2W games that everyone hates on and associates with the MMO classification. Destiny is, at the very least, a MMOFPS, and not an MMORPG, because of its mechanics in-game and the way the servers behave. By the way, MMO stands for "Massive Multiplayer Online". Last I checked, that's exactly what Destiny offers in the style of a shared world shooter with. Bungie probably doesn't want to classify it as MMO because of the stigma the term carries, which would hurt their sales if they went head on and officially classified it as MMO.

A genre is a classification. The definition of a genre is " a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter". And an MMO is all based on server capacity. If every game with a lot of players on multiplayer is considered one, then Call of duty and Battlefield could all be considered MMOs. Destiny definitely has MMO aspects to it though, along with FPS and RPG elements, which would classify it as a cross genre game, but I would not go as far as considering it a straight up MMO.
