This is the entitlement generation. Narcissistic, self-centered, self-gratifying and childish. I have been playing games since the 70s when space invaders and the Atari 2600 came out. Up until the last decade, the gaming community (and the internet as a whole) was for the most part, helpful and civil. Sure there were "trolls" in the 90s and 00's, but it was not a systemic cancer like it is now. It seems that today, people can't even recognize that they are being heard unless it's with an over the top trash-talking and hateful ideology. As a father, I really fear for my kid. Though I loathe to pontificate, it sometimes seems that most under the age of 30 are simply not able to deal with conflicting ideas or opinions (i.e. "Life") without a tourette-induced tantrum of anger ("STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE!"). And GOD FORBID that something should not go they way they "think" it should...

  • This is painfully wrong. I can't even begin to put into words how wrong it is for the simple fact that if you really and truly believe what you just said, your frame of mind will never accept reality. I hope, for your own sake, that you simply got a bit carried away with the point you were trying to make (That children act like children and that's nothing new or special.)

  • Yea, perhaps I am over-exaggerating a bit, but just a bit. Children do act like children, and they always will. But it does seem that there is a proliferation of "adult children" these days. See, only a few years ago, it would be uncommon (but not unheard of) to see someone hiding behind a tag like "Pu55y_Lick3r_69" come in and troll a thread/topic with some racial/misogynistic slurs. But back then it was generally understood and unspoken that someone that lacking in self-respect is a obviously child who's never even been close to a vagina other than the one they came out of. And we would generally expect that from a child who doesn't know any better. But nowadays that's normal, for adults. Just look at the replies to a typical YouTube video.

  • I'm 28 - I've played games since I was about 7 (Atari) and I'm fine - I think... I also teach at senior school level and I have to agree with your views on how children are adapting to 21st century society - what's worse, is that with every other year (about 3 years) the problems you describe with lower generations worsen! I'm not saying it's the end of the universe of anything, but the shift in social values is something to be afraid of, it'll only be a matter of time before I no longer "connect" to the pupils I teach and become another one of those old fuddy duddy teachers. At least playing computer games holds me back to these social changes though!

  • One final point: To be fair, I don't really blame the current generation, because clearly, many of them simply don't know any better. I blame my generation (the parents), for not regulating their precious little snowflakes that can apparently do no wrong.
