Destiny's Biggest Problem: It's a Social Game with No Communication

The beta has been great overall. There are some balance changes that are needed, but I'm confident that that can be ironed out. My biggest concern is that I've played 14 hours and I only talked to one person other than my two clanmates. Is it just me? Have you talked with anyone? There are two issues I think. 1) Voice Chat is really limited: - No voice chat in PVP. It's entirely team-based, but I can't talk to anyone? Is voice chat really limited to fireteams only? That's crazy limited. I just moved from 360 to PS4 so I don't have a lot of friends yet. It'd be cool to get to know some other Destiny players. - Is there really no voice chat in Strikes by default? Strikes are 3 person fireteams, but whenever I did a strike, no one talked. I clicked R3 on my teammate, invited them to my fireteam, at which point they went back to orbit, then re-entered the game and I could talk to them! How does that make sense? Is this really how it works? If we make voice chat more common, then we'll need options. Like "All", "Team" and "None". Just like Halo games. 2) If you accept that voice chat is going to be really limited, there's still no effective way to talk to teammates. The built-in gestures are fun in the Tower, but useless in the field. - Waving is good while exploring, but unhelpful during strikes. - Pointing is completely useless unless you're looking directly at your teammate. And even then it's only good for a direction, not pointing at an object. - Sitting? Why would I sit in an active battlezone? I suppose it's nice for sitting for screenshots with Bungie's beautiful skyboxes, but I don't *need* it like I do the stuff below. - Dancing is just fine. We really need combat-related gestures. Here are some ideas I brainstormed this morning. Feel free to add/criticize - Call target. Have you tried to take out that Demon Walker with a team that is just shooting at whatever they damn well please? Being able to really call out what to shoot will make teams much more effective. - Rally to me/ Regroup. Strikes start out in wide open explore territory. I had a teammate get distracted and wander off at the start and my other teammate charged straight ahead. There was no way to tell one to hurry up and the other to wait up. So very frustrating. It'd also be helpful for trying to group up in between waves like during the Strike. - Awesome/Thank You. Those two above are great for combat, but we need a way to interact with our teammates too. Someone resurrects you? Say thanks! You shoot a Stealth Vandal right before they knife your buddy? Now you can see that they appreciate it, rather than just them wandering away. - Keep dancing. It's fun to dance on the broken shell of Sepkis Prime. A few more ideas: "Help!" "Revive Needed!" "Follow me!" "Attack/Defend" Perhaps even a system like Dark Souls where you can "equip" various gestures. How do y'all feel? Agree? disagree? Big problem? Not a problem? I posted this on Reddit's Destiny subreddit, where it's gotten a lot of great feedback. I wanted to make sure it was seen here too. Edit: Thanks for all the great responses, everyone. And thanks for jumping in, DeeJ! Some things I wanted to highlight were: - This great mock-up of what an expanded gesture system could look like. - Some discussion on suggested individual voice settings for different play areas. - And a great solution that lets players decide up front what voice options they want, without a lot of fiddliness. I also wanted to point out with how well Hearthstone has done with limiting player interactions. It's a little different because it's not a team-based game, but like Dark Souls, it won't let players abuse each other. This is why I think gestures with non-friends is such a great option. It'll keep things positive and helpful but still let players participate who don't want to use/hear voice. I'm not sure how much of this is feasible for game that's going to release in 48 days (gold master is probably much sooner!). So these are some wishlist items to be sure. I hope we can make some voice changes by launch at the least and maybe keep an expanded gesture system in mind for future updates. Voice chat (or even free text chat) can definitely be abused, so Bungie's concern is totally valid. I'm glad they're listening to us and look forward to the response! P.S. This is my favorite response.

  • How many of you have played cod? I bet most of you. How many times have you come across an annoying troll, or someone full of vulgarity and trash talk? Or how about someones music blasting or that person with a mic that has no backround noise cancellation? IN that very moment, before you ever so "conveniently" hit the mute button, you were annoyed. There was a cringe. Your blood pressure rose. There was negative energy present. You said shut up. Angry words might have been exchanged. In destiny we didnt have to deal with that... and wow, that was nice for a change! Maybe this is one of the reasons destiny for the most part has been a pleasurable experience for all of us. I know many of you want the option to chat and I fully understand the reasons behind it. If bungie does enable chat my hope is that it can be turned off PRIOR to ever having to hear anyone. Hopefully while in story mode we will not have to stop what we're doing just to mute someone....that in itself would ruin our gameplay experience and immersion.

I believe the option for voice chat should be there but turned off by default. Online gaming communities are ALL toxic as hell. I for one am not interested in making friends over the internet. I play with people I know personally and would rather not have to listen to the absurd amount of negativity that oozes from the web. If I was making the game I would leave the game the way it is. If you want to talk to someone add them to your team. The only things in chat are people playing music and trolls 99% of the time.

    • TL;DR: How about keeping current voice chat behavior as the default, which in-game settings that allow the player to control his/her experience? I can appreciate where you're coming from, but there are no words to describe how it feels to watch someone you love crumble to tears after being the target of sexual assault threats because of her performance during a game. I honestly can't even imagine how my wife felt when the happened to her, but I really missed playing Halo with her - she never picked it up again after her first foray into Halo 2 multiplayer. Harassment is a very large, very real problem, and women get the very worst of it. The fact that Destiny had such restrictive voice chat was what ultimately convinced her to try playing the Beta with me. I want all of us to be happy, so I suggest if Bungie makes any changes, it's to leave the current configuration as default, but add in settings that allow the user to customize voice chat behavior to suit his/her comfort level. And bring back the AHole button. Possibly even integrate with the Bungie.net backend and mute any players in-game that you have ignored on bnet.

    • I don't follow why there is this type of limitations with chat. The Xbox One at least does the job so let XBL work and we can choose to report problems via XBL. For PS4, etc. no suggestions but the chat should be open always. If I can see you in FPS, we should be able to chat. Now in 3rd person (Tower) it should have a click to chat under the other options like inspect (click to chat and prompt to accept. Just my opinions.

      • Great post!! I haven't delved into the chat myself, but seeing the party problems, and the need for communication during missions/strikes, this is something that needs addressed. If there isn't enough time to implement it on release, it should be patched in ASAP afterwards.

The only thing lacking in Destiny is in game chat. During a strike your fire-team should automatically be in chat. When inviting players to your fire-team we should have the option of chat. This issue was brought up during the Alpha and hope it will be corrected before launch. Thanks again for an amazing game Bungie.

+1 x 100000000000000000000000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This game NEEDS voice chat!!!! I haven't heard one SINGLE person since I've played, and how am I suppose to make friends to then make a fireteam??? 1) Grouping done by the game needs voice chat so we can communicate on the quest at hand.. 2) The tower should have SOME kind of communication.. it's completely lifeless and dead in there... 3) The open world should have proximity voice communication, so you can actually communicate with people to party up. 4) THE MOST IMPORTANT!!! PvP............ NEEDS to have voice chat.... how does it not??? This is THE single most ridiculous and WORST thing about this game...... Whoever had the idea to not include voice chat in PvP, clearly has NO IDEA about PvP!!! Absolutely absurd.... P.S. Anyone complaining about what comes through the mic, and what they hear..... learn.... to.... use.... the... mute.... button... and.... stfu....!!

      • I think that R3 should be bound to a ping, so that people im your fireteam know what you are talking about. This idea comes from league of legends, and R3 isn't really doing much anyway unless you are aiming at another player. And why would you want to ping another player anyway?

I was just assuming voice chat for pvp wasn't in the beta but would be for live version. I mean that is a must have for pvp. I can understand them being hesitant on the proximity chat although I think it would be a great option if you could turn it on or off At the very least have a text chat in the tower...

        • Advanced gestures might be cool, but not effective in a combat scenario. We found a workaround to have the party app onscreen during gameplay but that eats up a 1/3 of the screen real estate; not good. Voice is absolutely necessary, if nothing more than for the fire team. Perhaps there can be some way to invite or request chat with others. Definitely agree that there can be too many trolls causing issues if completely open..

          • OK, I assumed that voice chat was not added as it was a Beta. Having no voice chat would be a REAL let down, and I think a "game" changer. Give me an individual mute button and I do not have to worry about talk I do not want to hear.

          • Ye I think trying to shield us from trolls and haters was bungies reason. I find that more than a little patronizing to be honest. I'm a grown man, I can deal with suckahs myself, just gimme a report button and/or mute. Job Done Taking an obviously useful and arguably necessary feature out of your game seems a bit like cutting your feet off coz your shoes are ugly

            • If the voice chat truly is only limited to three man fire teams even in PVP Bungie needs to change that right now because it's just wrong. Non communication between people that are on the same team but in a different fire team is a serious programming design flaw. It causes no end of coordination problems. Especially if only four people in a PS4 voice chat on a opposing team are able to communicate and help each other and cover for their friends planning and mistakes. While your own team is just running about like chickens with their heads cut off because no is able to communicate with each other because they don't know one and other. Sorry to use a graphic description I'm trying to make a point. Bungie please address the issue. On a related issue please my fellow PS4 owners. Your systems came with cheap headset remember to PLUG IT IN! And plug it in all the way, it's like a old airplane mic jack you have make sure to give it a firm shove so you feel the pop of the end of it secure itself. It's not like cheap music headphone jacks you just slide in, if you don't make sure it's locked in it won't work properly. "My Dad" was actually the one who notice the design feature and showed me what I had overlooked like an idiot! So please plug in your headsets in all the way, you do have them. Push the "ON/OFF" slider switch on the side. Communicate people!

              • Here here. I got to the tower and the first thing I did was plug my mic in... But I couldn't talk to anyone. On Xbox One the problem amplifies by the fact that even if your in a fire team you have to be in a Xbox live party to talk. Not the case on play station ... I have both platforms.... #feedback

              • I kinda think that there will be more emotes when the game comes out, and they will be customizable. I also think that pointing at something should 'spot it' and keep a nav point over it for another team member.

              • I entirely agree. Especially with the built-in gestures. There have been numerous times I have fallen and someone revived me or someone just helped me take out some enemies and I have wanted to say "thanks". Even finding loot chests or other items of interest but really I didn't have much of an opportunity to let my fellow team members know about it. I particularly really like the idea of customizable gestures where I can set my d-pad to whatever gestures I feel like going into the story/exploration/strike beforehand. I still really enjoy the gestures that have currently been generated for the game, but I also really enjoy the ones that John of Mars has brainstormed. I'm sure others have awesome useful gestures as well that might be taken into consideration. I think having the option for communication is important. If you don't have a mic though, I feel that communication in game through the gestures is equally important. It will help the teams feel more like "teammates" and help each other work together.
