Destiny's Biggest Problem: It's a Social Game with No Communication

The beta has been great overall. There are some balance changes that are needed, but I'm confident that that can be ironed out. My biggest concern is that I've played 14 hours and I only talked to one person other than my two clanmates. Is it just me? Have you talked with anyone? There are two issues I think. 1) Voice Chat is really limited: - No voice chat in PVP. It's entirely team-based, but I can't talk to anyone? Is voice chat really limited to fireteams only? That's crazy limited. I just moved from 360 to PS4 so I don't have a lot of friends yet. It'd be cool to get to know some other Destiny players. - Is there really no voice chat in Strikes by default? Strikes are 3 person fireteams, but whenever I did a strike, no one talked. I clicked R3 on my teammate, invited them to my fireteam, at which point they went back to orbit, then re-entered the game and I could talk to them! How does that make sense? Is this really how it works? If we make voice chat more common, then we'll need options. Like "All", "Team" and "None". Just like Halo games. 2) If you accept that voice chat is going to be really limited, there's still no effective way to talk to teammates. The built-in gestures are fun in the Tower, but useless in the field. - Waving is good while exploring, but unhelpful during strikes. - Pointing is completely useless unless you're looking directly at your teammate. And even then it's only good for a direction, not pointing at an object. - Sitting? Why would I sit in an active battlezone? I suppose it's nice for sitting for screenshots with Bungie's beautiful skyboxes, but I don't *need* it like I do the stuff below. - Dancing is just fine. We really need combat-related gestures. Here are some ideas I brainstormed this morning. Feel free to add/criticize - Call target. Have you tried to take out that Demon Walker with a team that is just shooting at whatever they damn well please? Being able to really call out what to shoot will make teams much more effective. - Rally to me/ Regroup. Strikes start out in wide open explore territory. I had a teammate get distracted and wander off at the start and my other teammate charged straight ahead. There was no way to tell one to hurry up and the other to wait up. So very frustrating. It'd also be helpful for trying to group up in between waves like during the Strike. - Awesome/Thank You. Those two above are great for combat, but we need a way to interact with our teammates too. Someone resurrects you? Say thanks! You shoot a Stealth Vandal right before they knife your buddy? Now you can see that they appreciate it, rather than just them wandering away. - Keep dancing. It's fun to dance on the broken shell of Sepkis Prime. A few more ideas: "Help!" "Revive Needed!" "Follow me!" "Attack/Defend" Perhaps even a system like Dark Souls where you can "equip" various gestures. How do y'all feel? Agree? disagree? Big problem? Not a problem? I posted this on Reddit's Destiny subreddit, where it's gotten a lot of great feedback. I wanted to make sure it was seen here too. Edit: Thanks for all the great responses, everyone. And thanks for jumping in, DeeJ! Some things I wanted to highlight were: - This great mock-up of what an expanded gesture system could look like. - Some discussion on suggested individual voice settings for different play areas. - And a great solution that lets players decide up front what voice options they want, without a lot of fiddliness. I also wanted to point out with how well Hearthstone has done with limiting player interactions. It's a little different because it's not a team-based game, but like Dark Souls, it won't let players abuse each other. This is why I think gestures with non-friends is such a great option. It'll keep things positive and helpful but still let players participate who don't want to use/hear voice. I'm not sure how much of this is feasible for game that's going to release in 48 days (gold master is probably much sooner!). So these are some wishlist items to be sure. I hope we can make some voice changes by launch at the least and maybe keep an expanded gesture system in mind for future updates. Voice chat (or even free text chat) can definitely be abused, so Bungie's concern is totally valid. I'm glad they're listening to us and look forward to the response! P.S. This is my favorite response.

  • If friends and friends of friends were prioritized in the match making system that'd also help in the social aspect

  • Here is the most recent response to that
The general complaint with Destiny has been the lack of a proper chat system. Will there be team chat in multiplayer and proximity chat in story missions in the final game? We’ve seen the feedback, and there’s quite a bit of ongoing discussion happening around this right now. I don’t have a definitive decision, but I can say that the team wanted to err on the side of promoting and fostering positive communications between strangers in the world, and knew that friends were going to find simple and effective ways to enable voice chat with friends through the Fireteam audio channel, and platform chat. We hear you, though. Please keep sounding off with feedback. We’re just getting started!
Source: http://m.ign.com/articles/2014/07/29/bungie-answers-your-destiny-questions-ign-first

But I don't want to talk to OR hear you filthy plebeians. My dance and teabag is all the communication I need.

I have suggested in a couple of places a multi function gesture system. utilizing presses, holds and double taps. You could dramatically increase the amount of commands and still retain functionally quick gestures. I also have suggest pointing at something specific with your crosshairs could do a callout on a target.

    • Its quite easy to find people to play,I dont get this post, look for a clan, you are english it is easier for you than for me to find another native speaker. And I found a lot of friends there, played iron banner with clan friends and old friends...etc Look for a clan in the forums and you'll always have people to play with

you can always send a friend request and make a party (I dont know how its called the PS party). Invite him to your fireteam and go party, thats what I did. You can also look for companyons here, thats why bungie did this web right? Clans and everything... But the ingame chat is there,in xbox360 at least I could speak with my friends through game (Maybe because we were in the same fireteam?)

    • The destiny Beta reminded me of the Guild Wars Beta in many ways. Unlike in GW, however, Destiny did not even offer text chat, which was a bit awkward. While this is more a PC game thing, I believe that Destiny would benefit from having at least a chat window - this is a game with a social component afterall. Also, many people, including me, dislike voice chatting with strangers, and a bit of text can go a long way to get a fireteam to work efficiently. There will always be haters and trolls, but many people forget that there are also players who are out there to simply have fun, not to cause mischief. Finding people to play Destiny with would be much easier if there was a text option - and USB keyboards are cheap. Unlike headsets, if one expects at least decent quality. Add an optional profanity filter, tie it to the consoles' parental controls if you have to. Additionally, ignoring rude text chatters is a lot easier and less agitating than sifting through the player roster, clicking through menus only to mute one offensive voice chat. That's all I can think of for now... I should go.

    • I really like your suggestion to use the Dpad for combat communication. One of those callouts should be, I found the goods (chests). As for voice. Plz no. I hate hearing trash and drunken rants.

I agree. Now I completely understand Bungie's position, as their previous games - and most current MP shooters - have pretty atrocious people who ruin experiences. But at least on Xbox, you have the ability to control who you hear (mute an individual, mute all, hear only those on your team, etc). Bungie just chooses for you now. I found it very frustrating on strikes when I couldn't communicate with anyone. I suppose I could have invited the people to my fireteam, but then it becomes cumbersome, plus I have to remove you if we part ways after the strike. I think the stance needs to be that while there are people out there who will try to ruin your experience, those hopefully rare encounters can be countered by abilities we have available to us. By the way, isn't Bungie the one who invented non-verbal taunting and mockery, a.k.a. teabagging?

I wish pointing allowed you to place a Nav point. Nav points are so critical in team play in rallying or sharing finds. We certainly need no and yes emotes. I'm not sure if an entire Tower Prox chat is needed. I can see the issues on why Bungie chose the format they did. I would say pick a few lounges and Prox chat them like the one at the bottom of the hangar. Or place a amphitheater meant for Prox chat in the Tower where players can mingle and talk with out contaminating the entire Tower experience.

    • Someone mentioned more useful emotes while in combat. We could use a "revive me" emote as an alternative to talking in a fire team.

      • Give us proximity chat. You can also see the roster on explore mode and in the tower. With this feature bungie needs to add a mute option if your being harassed, annoyed, or what ever. Plus in pvp no one talks and it's hard to communicate as a team. It is also a lot harder to meet new people in this "social" game.

      • This mmo is very lacking in MMO chating woth strangers, trading, selling, exchamging. But the most important IS the communication. Why is it that they feel that the less you talk to people the better? NO! Communication is key considering this is a team based game and if you are in pve or pvp you need to be able to communicate with people! Or else why are they in the world other than just to roam around while you see the walk by. There needs to be a chat for teams in pvp and a way to speak to other players in the open world

            • I think the point gesture should put down and indicator in the world (not the tower). Aim the reticle at something near or far, hit point, and a small indicator shows up. Since so many people exist in the world, it may need to be limited to fire teams or you can only point every 10-15 seconds
