How do you feel about hand cannons now?

Hand Cannons still need more power

2075

Hand Cannons are great the way they are

1714

Hand Cannons are OP

209

Hand cannons seem to have gotten a slight buff but not near enough. Why would I choose a hand cannon versus a scout rifle when they have pretty much the same damage per shot but one has almost twice as many rounds and a higher rate of fire and both equally accurate if the scout rifle is not more accurate or at least a little easier to aim. The hand cannon can't even get a one shot kill head shot on level 8, granted the scout rifle cannot either but with the limitations the hand cannon has ammo/ROF wise I think it should be a lot more powerful. Literally not enough bang for my buck on the hand cannon. Maybe there are better ones in the full game? But right now they are still resembling what should be a "secondary weapon" not a special but a secondary. Like an "oh no I'm out if rounds in my primary better switch to the last ditch effort to make it outta this!" Any other opinions on these so called "cannons"?

  • I switched briefly from a hand cannon to a scout rifle just to try and found not nearly as much power, I can hold my own with a hand cannon against hordes of enemies and don't worry too much about magazine/cylinder size. Having an 8-round hand cannon is pretty handy as well as plenty of equipment to buff reload speed. I love it.

    • Would love to keep using it but it has to feel like I'm shooting a Cannon! Especially because I need to get closer to the enemy and harder to shoot and low capacity and magazine... every shot needs to count! You miss one and don't have time to reload and you're in a world of hurt! Needs to be worth all the risks. Worth all the downsides it inherently it has.. More Damage for sure.

Basically right now hand cannons are scout rifles with less range, reload speed, and mag size + more recoil. So they need to fix that...

    • What scout riffle do you have? I've only seen scout riffles with about HALF the impact of HCs. Seriously, I think the stats on these weapon classes should be reversed almost completely. SRs with the impact, recoil, and ROF as HCs. Actually make a decent long range weapon of it. And HCs with much higher ROF, lower impact, less recoil, and same range. Right now HCs don't have the range to be fired over distance and lack the ROF to be used effectively as CQC weapons. I think trading the high impact and recoil for faster ROF will balance this weapon out to a beautiful and snappy close to mid range weapon.

    • Because if you have Thorn the hand cannon is where it's at.

I find hand cannons to be my go-to weapon. My only beef is the mag size. Most only have 5-6 shots and a few have 11-13... I say the 5-6(which also usually have a mmo mods rather than reload n stability) need to be boosted to 8. Scout rifles only do about half the amount of damage than my hand cannon and cannot 1-shot the cannon fodder enemies like dreegs and shanks at my level whereas I don't even have to aim my hand cannon to do such a thing. I can snipe with my hand cannon just about as good as a scout rifle too If I have to. In short I say either rate if fire or magazine size needs to be increased on hand cannons because the rest is just fine

    • [The hand cannon can't even get a one shot kill head shot on level 8] Let's Go sniping with the hand cannon,I'll show you how to one shot and pop heads from your neighbors yard lol. Jk but I see no buff...mine fits my Palm fine and works efficiently

    • The default reload times are still way too long. I can get up and go make a sandwich and come back to catch him flipping the barrel back in.

    • Hand cannons in are great I think when it comes to PvE but in PvP they need a boost badly. 2 shots to the head for the most part wouldn't be OP because handcannons in pvp are more difficult to use than other weaponry. 3-4 body guaranteed would be solid. It's a gun thay takes time to master especially in the pressure of a Pvp environment and should be given a boost considering those who take on the challenge to master it. If nothing at all at least give hunters a 2 headshot buff perk for gunslinger.

    • Well after spending 1 week playing only with hand cannons I just realized that they are great weapons but they need a lot of skill. Also in a PVE scenery they are fabulous and feel ver well balanced however, in a PVP scenario this are just a joke in relationship to many other primary weapons which kind of sucks because hand cannons were meant to have a high output damage but this is not the case. Bungie I love destiny it's the only game that I think I'll be able to actually have fun in a very long time however, this issue of hand cannons being weak in PVP really take away some of that fun. Many of us would be very thankful if you guys manage to fix this. Anyhow good luck and thank you for such a great game! Can't wait for DLCs.

      • I don't know about everyone else but I've had pretty good success with hand cannons in PVP. In fact that's all I use. It really depends on the quality of weapon you have. A lvl 20 rare hand cannon should be about good enough to take out someone with 3 to 4 shots. Yes you have to be quite skilled to use them but once you get used to getting mostly head shots people start dropping like flies. My only gripe with it is that they need to introduce hand cannons that have a reload speed buff. It takes way way to long to reload. Maybe an exotic that has a slot to increase reload speed would be nice.

Still not great at crucible but after spending a couple solid days I'm way better than before anyways. One of the biggest improvements was after using handcannons in story to get used to them and trying it out again in crucible. This was after not having much success previously. I used to only use auto rifles before and had some mixed success. Sometimes I cold hold the trigger and once I held down on the stick I could line it up pretty well, others more erratic, particularly with a moving target. I think it often depended on which particular rifle I was using. Once I started using handcannons I found I was a way better shot, that includes moving targets, also it seems like head shots are pretty easy, even from longer distances. I find I can often get some good snapshots off with L2 followed by R2 quickly. I find I still can get outgunned at close range, but as combat approaches mid range and even further I can often outgun auto rifles. Also where handcannons really shine is popping out of cover. Since each shot hits hard so you can pop one or two shots, duck behind cover and repeat. Autos don't benefit from this as much since they rely on quantity of bullets. With a hard hitting weapon you only need to pop out to get those one or two shots in. I just find I'm no where near as accurate with auto anymore as I am with handcannons and I can play more strategically with handcannon.

        • They're actually pretty decent now. I was a bit worried to use them in the full game, but when I realized I could three shot someone in PvP, I realized that they're very underrated. And they actually require some skill to use! They're still not as good as Auto Rifles, but they're easily the second best primary for PvP.

        • Iron Banner update: By the time you hit twice with a hand cannon, the enemy already killed you 3 times. Using a fully upgraded Last Word and I'm having a bad time against weapons like SUROS Regime

          • I love The Last Word. If you know how to use it in pvp, like keeping a certain distance, this thing is a beast. Too bad I have the rusher mentality, i rush more than i should, thus always get caught out of position.

            • you just have to use them for a while and get the feel of them. they are harder to use but much more rewarding. however it seems the majority of the population that plays destiny doesn't like high risk high reward so they stick to ARs

              • The firing animation makes it hard to stay on people's "heads". If I'm shooting at something huge like Sepiks' crit zone it's fine, but Atheon's "head" is a bit harder to shoot. And Players'.

More often than not my Painted Big Chief kills in two headshots. That's a goddamn awesome feeling. If anything survives the two headshots, a gust of wind would kill it off. You could just glare angrily and watch them crumble away. So yeah, I love these beautiful works of art. EDIT: Hand cannons are also fantastic for punching enthusiasts like myself. I believe one shot anywhere to the body immediately after or right before a melee attack will kill anyone. Gotta' love that One-Two Punch for when your Shoulder Charge isn't available.

Why do the handcannons need more power? What is wrong with you people? They friggin' 3 shot in the Crucible... Edit: It's not the guns fault you're bad.

                  • Honestly, I used to prefer Scout Rifles over Hand Cannons (or anything else for that matter) for PvE and PvP, but then I rolled Hawkmoon on a random Legendary engram, and in the process of leveling that bad boy (still not fully leveled) I came to love the HC. I actually started neglecting my Legendary Scout Rifle in favor of leveling Hawkmoon and a back up HC (non-exotic...it's only a Rare and still pretty killer, though I'll admit the mag size is limited on Rare HCs) Most of the Legendary/Exotic HCs have pretty god mag sizes and range so that's sort of a non-issue. Rate of fire is slower than a Scout Rifle and stability is a bit of an issue (Hawkmoon is actually ok for the power it puts out), but you get used to both quickly. The big difference, and what makes up for the RoF and Stability, is that my Rare HC can one shot kill a Knight when my Legendary SR takes at least three shots (and Rare AR around one-third to half a clip). So mag size may be smaller and RoF my be slower, but if you are good enough to hit the target, you don't need as many shots. As for PvP, I mostly suck regardless of weapon choice. I'm more of a "panic and melee" player, with the occasional lucky Auto Rifle/Grenade/Shotgun kill. I'm still working on building HC skill in PvP, but if I can get to the level of play I'm at with PvE, I'm sure the HC would be reliable. The one gripe I have with HCs is that the sights are a bit lame. Hawkmoon is ok, because it has cool rail fins that frame the sight, but all other HCs just have a snapshot sight, which make aiming down sight a bit difficult to get used to. I would love to see a HC with a proper red dot sight, or even a ranged lens, just to have something to switch to for mid/long range scenarios. (check my Warlock if you want to see Hawkmoon's stats)
