While watching a ChrisFrancisK vid on faction specific gear I came to a realisation.
Dead Orbit is aligned to the Awoken. Specifically the Awoken that dwell in the 'Reef'.
Evidence:
Faction Representative is Awoken.
Obvious, I know but it should be said.
The description of the faction says that they only grudgingly have a presence in the Tower.
This suggests that the politics behind Dead Orbit are not aligned with the Tower and, as they are the only other major population center in the Sol System, the Reef is likely the seat of their power.
Item specific flavour text alludes to an exodus, just like that undertaken by the people that would become the Awoken.
Eg: Oblivion Greaves (10:15) have a quote that says "It will be cold and harrowing and we will not all survive. But it must be done."
The Awoken are supposedly the descendants of people that fled to the edges of the Sol System and were changed by the Darkness (I can't remember the source, maybe a grimoire card? Leave one in the thread and I'll add it) http://i.imgur.com/k4QWsMl.png (Thanks to ghost59).
As such it is likely that this quote refers to this event and thus to the origins of the Awoken. The quote is about hardships and doesn't have any of the hopefulness that one would expect to find in a quote about the initial diaspora of people during the Golden Age.
This is just one of several quotes that mentions these sorts of event.
Eg: "We must make our own safety without the City." This quote is from Dead Orbit gauntlets and while they may reference the independence of the Hunter Class, it is equally possible that it references independence from the City/Tower.
As these sorts of quotes are only found among Dead Orbit faction gear it seems likely that the faction itself would have strong ties to this exodus and it's survivors/descendants.
Please add any other sources/evidence that you find that are related to the origins of Dead Orbit. Perhaps we can even try to puzzle out the other factions as well.
Thanks to ChrisFrancisK for providing the source material.
TL/DR: Dead Orbit are aligned with the Awoken and the Reef because the flavour text for their gear alludes to the origin of the Awoken/Reef.

All I know is, I love my badass Awoken Hunter and the first non-exotic weapon I'm really excited about (the only weapon I saw during the Beta that I wanted) is the Unwilling Soul-09. I shall have it.

Tell us something we dont already know.... Most already know this. *sips tea

Once upon at time, in an overly chlorinated public pool, the Awoken were born...
-
I wanted to be an Exo because they look like mini transformers, but I was planning on going to dead orbit, so I will switch to Awoken. Very interesting info, thanks!
-
Now my main question is, who are the Seven Seraphs and where are they?
-
I hope the non crucible/vanguard sets are just sharing a placeholder model, because they all look exactly alike, save for color

Edited by Raptorkid24: 7/9/2014 10:14:14 PMFrom what I gather, Dead Orbit is trying to coax people in the city to go on another 'mass exodus' and persuade them to leave earth before the darkness comes.

I had previously wrote for your opinion in this thread so im coming back to it. I was looking through the grimoire cards and under allies it list city factions. As in the ones missing from the tower.

Nice discovery :)

Niceeee, awoken warlock here I come.
-
Bumping for someone. Or everyone.
-
A fair analysis I think :)
-
I was gonna make my Exo Dead Orbit, but it shall go to FWC instead. My Warlock Awoken will be Dead Orbit now ! :D

Incredible thread well done.

From what I have gathered about Dead Orbit (this is only from reading the text on all of the gear the faction rep within the tower offered), they are a group of people that are unwilling to stay in one place. Call them travelers, because they want to expand and explore. They try to encourage others to do the same, don't become caged within the city like an animal. As far as the faction being tied to Awoken, I don't know.. but it would make sense, since Awoken are proclaimed to be "brought back from the dead" and Orbit would maybe stand for their desire to expand and conquer?..

Found a great topic that greatly ties into this thread!! http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post?id=66006579

Im only writing this in your post because there is already intelligent life here and im curious on your thoughts. So from what I remember their was only 3 factions in tower as of alpha. Alot of people speculate that the tower is bigger than it was in alpha do to the big closed door and the wall top center that looked like it could be temporary. But from putting together numerous images I think there must be another social spot. There are images of the tower from behind it and it looks no bigger, also todays final form image shows the tower center looking the same. There are several images ( maybe concept) of guardians hanging out in what seems to be a city. Could it be the last city of earth? Do we get to go down from the tower to street level? Also in this city there is a statue made very similar to a statue from an image from venus. Could we have another social spot on another planet? So many questions. Please feel free to share any thoughts or tell me im crazy.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet but. . . analyze the name of the faction itself. Dead Orbit. If something is in a dead orbit it has no one at the controls and will slowly degrade until it impacts whatever it may be orbiting. The name itself could reflect the belief that the Traveler is dead and non-Awoken are fools for gathering under it. Just some food for thought.

That just makes me want to join Dead Orbit even more!

More like this please :) Finally some smart speculation and decent discussion. Not by me, but it's fun to read. Makes a nice change from all the bitching that seems to be going on.
