Should Proximity Chat Be Implemented As an Option?

READ BEFORE VOTING Destiny, Bungie’s newest exquisite videogame, is filled with breathtaking visuals and compelling gameplay, and that’s after only playing the Alpha and Beta versions, although there is one major flaw that’s been brought to my attention: Destiny lacks proximity chat, which is the ability to speak with other players whom are near you. Currently, players can wave to each other, dance with each other, and point at things “in a desperate, and futile, attempt at communication” (SoloPopo). Players can’t make new friends, talk about strategies, nor ask for assistance. With proximity chat, players can get to know each other and share their experiences they’ve had in Destiny. Maybe you just want to compliment someone’s awesome armor and be on your way. Players would be able to talk about how they’ll complete an event or where to find some loot. Imagine trying to strategize by pointing everywhere. Players would be able to ask for assistance during combat. Imagine fighting enemies with a few other players, and when you get cornered, all you can do is point at them and dance for your life. Destiny is based on the notion of being always-online and multiplayer. If everyone is a mute, then what is the point? As SoloPopo said, “It's ridiculous, and kills the immersion. Why are other players even in the game if you can't interact with them?” Being able to wave and point is fine if you don’t have a headset plugged in, but it should be optional, because being able to speak is a much better alternative. Proximity chat should be the next feature implemented in Destiny. In GameInformer's interview with Lars Bakken, Bungie's multiplayer lead, Bakken stated "We know that, not just in multiplayer, that in general, when you get into a game with someone that you don't know or someone that you've never seen before and may never see again, they have this power to completely destroy your entire experience and maybe ruin the game for you forever" (Manuch). If another player is being obnoxious and you want to disable proximity chat, you can simply switch between three chat settings: Proximity, Fire Team, and Off. This feature would also require the following settings. Chat Settings: Proximity - Chat with players near you. Fire Team - Chat with your Fire Team. (A symbol appears above your head to non-fire team members which indicates that you cannot chat.) Off - You can't hear anyone in-game, nor can they hear you. (A symbol appears above your head to all players which indicates that you cannot chat. This setting would also be activated upon joining an Xbox LIVE party and whatever the similar chat system is called on Playstation consoles.) Orrr Proximity Chat: On/Off, and you can always hear and speak to your Fire Team. Here's another good thread about the topic. Here's an additional feature Coffeenator requested in the comments:
One feature I would add to the prox. chat is a kind of karma system where if someone gest muted by some number of people in a period of time that they are muted in-game for everyone except for players in their fire team if they are in one. Over time their Karma would get better and they would be unmuted until they would get muted enough to go over the threshold again.
Sources: SoloPopo. "Proximity Chat Is Not an Option." • Its a good idea if implemented correctly. I always use party chat anyway as you can talk to all your friends that are currently playing.

        • wow did not know this poll existed with so many people answering :) I made one before and it got a lot but nothing in the thousands :D I am super excited for this game and I would love if the chat option was available! it would make this game so much better and more cooperative and a social experience that makes players keep coming back for more! chat options are DEFINITELY needed in fireteams especially in pve and in pvp.. that almost should be a MUST.

I can deal with no Raid MM but no built in chat for at least fireteams is bad. They want an immersive environment but no way to truly interact? not logical.

You could do some basic communication with emotes, such as: tell someone to wait, tell someone you're ready to continue, ask someone to be in a fireteam with you. I developed an emote communication system for those basic messages. Everything else can be communicated if you choose to be in a fireteam with them. The way I have it set up is I'm ready: up, left (wave, point) Wait a minute: up, down (wave, sit) I'd like to play with you: up, right (wave, dance) All three start with wave and are only 2 emotes long so it should be really simple to remember. They can allow you to communicate the simple messages until you are in a fireteam with them. It isn't proximity chat but it solves the most common problems. Give me a bump if you like the idea!

              • I could honestly care less either way about proximity chat, but I would like a clan voice comm channel, at the very least in the tower, at the very most clan voice comms no matter what mode each individual member is in. I'm also hoping we will get some explore missions that allow for more than 1 fireteam/3 people. We have a close knit bunch at R1P, and durimg the beta we regularly had enough people on to fill a tower server plus some. Would like to be able to take that party to free roam.

                  • Proximity chat no, but a group chat for talking to others on your team but not in your fire team(say you and a friend plus the random in a strike, or your x number fire team and the random people in PvP) would be perfect.

That karma system is basically the mute ban system from Reach. It was a weighted system, so people who just spammed the mute button all the time didn't count for much (so you couldn't abuse it by trying to get everyone mute banned). And it wasn't permanent, it eventually wore off and gave you another chance at open chat. I think it should also be optional to follow, so you can either hear everyone by default (hear everyone, mute people on an individual basis), hear all but muted banned people (who you have to manually unmute, also allows for individual mutes as well per your preference of course), or everyone muted by default.

                  • I think in the tower there should be chat turned off and then if you start interacting with someone you can turn them on specifically and then on missions where you have your team of 3 and another random team of 3 its automatically turned on and

This...is a great way to get opinions out there. Great job oliverkeen77 for being a level-headed OP. Honestly an added feature for Proximity chat sounds like a great idea in retrospect and there is lots of good things about it. However, think about all the bad things: Trolls, Squeakers, Music Blarers, and the fact that you are just having a conversation with someone and suddenly some kid near you is yelling out that everyone should join his fireteam because he has a high K/D and that he can do what anyone can do and a lot of people more capable than him can do better. Muting could fix this, but a testing period for this feature would probably be the best course of action. However Bungie is known for being a community-based developing company so anyone who likes Bungie probably shares their values. At least that's what we want to believe anyways. Seeya Traveler-side Guardians!

Its T rated so that means limited online Interaction right? Edit: im not to worried though I have been on xbox for years and have enough friends. I generally ignore people in games anyway and have a pretty good idea of who I'll play with, party chat like always anyway.

                      • In the beta I went into the Underground in the cosmodrome with an unknown player, I helped them out taking out enemies. Not sure they wanted or need it, proximity chat would solve that kind of last minute assistance I would love to be out in the wilderness and hookup with other players on the spot to take on enemies

                        • I wouldn't use proximity chat, just for the fact that all you're gonna hear in the tower constantly, is squeakers constantly shouting out WANNA RAID, WANNA RAID? MY KD THIS MY KD THAT BLAH BLAH BLAH! I would however like them to add an algorithm to the strike match making that pairs players with mic's (obviously players in party scout as no mic's)

                        • You should definitely have the option to have it on and talk to other players around. If you get annoyed turn it off. It should be easy to access. Place the option on the back button where you access your ghost.
