If you have windows, did you install anti-malware programs before connecting online? did you run windows update after the install?

I just went to install it and it had tiny windows again. Does this mean I have a bad install disc?

  • When I was installing this time I noticed there was an efi boot and windows. The EFI had the small windows. I installed the windows this time and everything seems normal.
If you have windows, did you install anti-malware programs before connecting online?
Unless it's part of the install disc, no.
did you run windows update after the install?
It was about a week ago and I've so much crap trying to figure it out I couldn't tell ya. I just did what boot camp had me do and that was it. I'm reinstalling windows now though. Should i run windows update and where can I find it?

  • well shit bro. you just absolutely cannot run windows with an internet connection without some sort of antovirus and an anti malware program installed before setting up you internet connection. that's windows 101. since you're running windows 8, i'd say to go buy a physical retail copy of AVAST! 8 and a copy of Malware Bytes Anti Malware Pro. Avast can detect rootkits and stealthed malware/viruses. MBAM is an on-demand scanner. mac is relatively safe because it's mostly only run by hipsters and apple never officialy acknowledges any new infections discovered for Mac OS X. Windows Update is the 3rd thing you do after installing protection and updating all your hardware/firmware drivers. the Program is called Windows Update. i've no experience with 8.1 yet so look for windows update and run it.

  • yeah. so many systems run windows (93% of the entire world) that is a requirement to have security software on it because it has most of the malware due to marketshare.

  • no, DON'T do that. you want avoid the viruses. don't google freeware or antiviruses because most results would be malware in disguise. avoid Microsoft Security Essentials. it's no longer a good enough program. avoid Norton. norton is a resource hog with constant notifications/lag induction unless you have a supercomputer tier set up.. also viruses and malware are seperate categories and AVs usually do not provide AM. you want something like AVAST!, or Kaspersky, or Webroot in combination with something like Spybot Search and Destroy v1.62 and Malware Bytes AntiMalware Pro which are on demand scanners (they scan when only when directly told to). when using them you want to set them up to periodically scan your system at least once a day and after updates.

  • Mcaffee - decent choice Norton - practiclly a virus itself and almost useless as most basic hackers know the work arounds Comodo - a little less known anti virus / protection suites in many versions and alot for free
