The only thing changed was the trending sort. That sort has been broken because of a database issue for a while, and this maintenance fixed the issue... by editing the metadata all 3.78 million topics in the database to erase the influence of the bug. You should notice Trending being much better now.
For those that don't know, Trending is supposed to be a mix of Latest and Highest Rated. It shows you generally the latest topics, but if those topics have been liked, it gives them a little extra push to sort higher. Until recently, though, it was not very good at fading old topics out of the view - now, it is greatly biased toward newer stuff, making it much more useful, especially on high traffic forums like #Destiny.

With all of these problems it seem you guys have your work cut out for you!

How many SQL Queries does an operation like that take? :)
-
There are 3.78 million topics, and 5.9 million tags (non-unique) on those. So, a lot of rows to update. Only 3 SQL queries, though - one select and two updates... that take 11.17 minutes to run.

Interesting. I've done some SQL work in my major but never anything on that scale, I don't have much appreciation for how long those things can take sometimes :)

Career advice: learn how to do computer science related things at large scale and you will find lots of job opportunities. Demand for people who have experience in server side stuff at scale greatly outstrips supply. You can work in lots of different fields, too, everybody uses big data.

I think the job I've accepted with Amazon should provide me with plenty of that sort of experience, they seem like they deal with lots of super scalable stuff :)

Awesome! Get me some free stuff!

Congrats and good luck!

I should hope so.

More indices! Don't you have a $500,000,000 budget for disc space?
