Why do we have time zones?

All they do is complicate things. In today's society where communication is easier across long distances, we should have a set Earth time. In each respective area, people will learn what time the sun rises and what time it sets. Communication and correlation over long distances would be simpler, and keeping track of world events would also be easier. Agree or no?

agreed. i also think that airplanes are too bad for the environment. i propose that airport runways be retrofitted to be giant slingshots that sling planes into their destination. zero flight emissions.

    • Here's the deal. If we didn't have timezones the world would be a strange place. If we did have an international timezone, what countries time zone would we adopt? Also, people would be sleeping at like 11:00pm in one country, where it is dark and easy to sleep. Where as on the other side of the world, someone else is up and about at day time. So it wouldn't solve anything. An Australian could ask someone to play online at 11:00pm. To him that may be fairly early, but to his American friend fairly late. And if someone was talking about what time it was, and how early it may be, someone who it may be late at night for will get confused. And other countries have already adapted to the normal timezones, so it would actually complicate things further.

    • The only thing I hate is Daylight Savings Time. Technically, we do have an "Earth Time". It's Greenwich Mean Time. As for why we have time zones, it was because of trains. Time zones made it a lot easier to schedule arrival and departure times for trains. Instead of each station keeping its own time, a whole region would have a designated time. This system naturally was adopted by ships and aircraft over the years. Using a single time and ballparking whether it's morning or night on some other part of the world would make international shipping and transit a huge pain in the ass compared to adding or subtracting a few hours to your time. Right now, I know that if I ship something from New York at 10:00AM, it will arrive in Amsterdam at X:XXAM provided there are no delays.

      • because of trains. it would be interesting and weird if everyone ran on a 24 hr clock from GMT.

          • No. As for why they were created (in America at least. I dunno about other countries.) Originally time zones were a city by city basis. But when the railroads started getting built and manifest destiny and all that, there was confusion based on arrival and departure times and such. So, the government mandated time zones based on four different areas of the country; pacific, mountain, central, and eastern. There ya have it.

            • The only thing I find annoying about time zones is that not all countries use military time, e.g. the United States. I find this incredibly annoying whilst trying to plan events with friends in the UK. Sure, I could do the math and convert it easily enough, but it'd cut a step out to just switch the military time in general.

Erm no. A system where we have a set Earth time would not work out well. Rather than having to learn an offset (which allows you to do simple math), you'd need to memorize what hour morning / night is for that particular timezone and juggle all of that in your head. "Oh, I want to call my friend in Sweden, goodness, it's 7PM Earth Time, but I don't know what time of day it is over there! Is she sleeping? Guess I'm going to have to go look it up!" It really wouldn't simplify communication or correlation as a result.

                        • Well the idea is that the sun is opposite of your location at 24/12 pm. That way when someone gives you a number, you can have an idea of the lighting situation and such. I do agree that it be better for everyone to be on the same time though. The only issue there is that only one location will have a date/time correspondence with the rotation of the earth. Some places will change the date during the middle of the day. 24 hours will could be any time.
