United States "Gives up Internet control"

I would like to see the Internet as a decentralised centralised (not a typo) entity, wherein each political nation is responsible for its own Internet addressing (IPv4, IPv6) and DNS registration/servers. ICANN does not need to exist, especially once IPv6 becomes a more adopted addressing scheme (although that's somewhat dependent on ISPs as well). You want a .com? Register with [i]a[/i] registrar affiliated with a nation's DNS top level server and let it propagate to the other nations'. There doesn't need to be central/root servers controlling TLDs, and especially so when they're located in a country that [url=http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_SUNSHINE_WEEK_FOIA?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT]loves censorship[/url], [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Swartz]prosecuting "criminals"[/url], and spying on everyone it can. -blam!- that.

This is a very tricky issue. The US or any country for that matter should definitely not be in control. Giving it to the UN however may result in some issues, such as domain names being "banned" from use due to the political correctness mindset. Remember, other countries don't have a first amendment.

I was thinking about this, and actually it has me worried. The MPAA and other agencies have always had to negotiate with several agencies to enforce its policies. The anti-piracy groups have often come up with solutions to their problems that would be harmful for everyone else. Reducing the number of entities that they have to work with makes their job that much easier. My worry is that making the process too efficient would allow them to run roughshod over everyone else. Sure, the 'net would be safe from media piracy, but at what cost?
