The US government has declared it wants to stop being in charge of how the internet is run.
The US Commerce Department has announced its "intent" to hand control over to the wider net community.
It has asked net overseer Icann to work out how to shift control from the US government to an alternative body.
It said it wants the successor controlling body to be made up of both private companies and government representatives.
Well that's a good start, they have refused to do that since the internet was created, it's probably going to the UN now.
How do you think this would change things?

I don't care who's in charge of the internet as long as they do something to seriously bitch slap the rampant pirating community. Seriously, it's getting to the point where they honestly think they're doing everyone good by pirating.

>UN in charge of the Internet Oh god no, It's going to be like GW IRL

Chances are it'll be passed of to a private group, where it will proceed to be overtaken by something like Anonymous.

Why is everyone freaking out over the mention of the United Nations? The article clearly states that a small amount of power is being handed over to a group of corporations; not a government.

Edited by dazarobbo: 3/18/2014 12:12:36 AMThis is a good thing, but it's a pity so many people misunderstand what it means. I would like to see the Internet as a decentralised centralised (not a typo) entity, wherein each political nation is responsible for its own Internet addressing (IPv4, IPv6) and DNS registration/servers. ICANN does not need to exist, especially once IPv6 becomes a more adopted addressing scheme (although that's somewhat dependent on ISPs as well). You want a .com? Register with a registrar affiliated with a nation's DNS top level server and let it propagate to the other nations'. There doesn't need to be central/root servers controlling TLDs, and especially so when they're located in a country that loves censorship, prosecuting "criminals", and spying on everyone it can. -blam!- that.

Im just hoping the UN stays out of it as much as possible. They are utterly useless and full of politically correct dolts.
-
net neutrality was a direct product of the US controling the internet since it was the arpanet....
-
This is a very tricky issue. The US or any country for that matter should definitely not be in control. Giving it to the UN however may result in some issues, such as domain names being "banned" from use due to the political correctness mindset. Remember, other countries don't have a first amendment.
-
Good to see that Lonepaul doesn't see the horrific implications that this could bring, I wouldn't want his America hate boner to get deflated after realizing that keeping it in the hands of the US government was allowing for things like net neutrality to exist relatively unmolested.
-
Bad idea. Really bad. Get ready for internet taxes to fund the corruptocrats at the UN. - Der

I was thinking about this, and actually it has me worried. The MPAA and other agencies have always had to negotiate with several agencies to enforce its policies. The anti-piracy groups have often come up with solutions to their problems that would be harmful for everyone else. Reducing the number of entities that they have to work with makes their job that much easier. My worry is that making the process too efficient would allow them to run roughshod over everyone else. Sure, the 'net would be safe from media piracy, but at what cost?
