Need ideas for a persuasive speech

I'm about to begin working on a speech for my public speaking class. This speech in particular is to be a persuasive speech. I'm having a little trouble coming up with some ideas for a topic to discuss. A few of the obvious choices that were already chosen by other students are gun rights, gay marriage, legalizing marijuana, and other controversial topics. I'm just looking for some ideas. It's my job to introduce a problem, idea, point of view, etc. to the listeners and attempt to displace them from their own opinions or feelings and potentially change their minds. So give me anything that might be of major importance to you personally, interesting, or anything that comes to mind. Simple, controversial, anything! Thanks for the help in advance!

  • Title: Circumcision is a good thing Prerequisite(s): massive steel balls that will either land you in hot water or give you the highest possible grade 1. Don't stick to just speaking to your audience, that's boring. Interact with them. Before you talk too much about the topic, take a vote and ask how many people are in support of it like you are. Use a white board and mark down the results for people to see. 2. Drone on for a bit about how it's the parent's right, religious freedom, etc... but do so in a manner that makes it seem like these are actually good things and you believe that too. 3. Abruptly end your talk (pretend it's unplanned), and bring in a television. Put on a video showing the procedure being performed (don't actually tell them what it is, just play it) and make sure the volume is up loud enough for people to hear the screams. While it's playing, don't say anything. Just watch the horrified looks on people's faces. 4. Stop the video and immediately continue on about how how great it is. Conclude by citing pro-circumcision sources which claim the baby feels no pain, even though your video will clearly show it does - that's the point. Don't spend too long on this part though. The emotional impact of the video needs to still be in their minds at the end. 5. Take another vote. The results will have certainly dropped. Use this to show you've changed people's opinions. By the end, your audience will either still be in shock, or will think you are an absolute monster for try to advocate such a barbaric practice. The reason this will work is because, presumably, the majority of people have never seen it performed. Graphic medical procedures are extremely confronting, especially when a pain response is visual and audible - it's going to affect people at their very core. Thus, the people in your audience in support of it are now (or at least should be) morally conflicted and have to re-evaluate their principles. Thus, success.
