So it's not the plug, but the charger? Exactly which phones aren't able to use standard USB chargers? This isn't talking about firewire/micro USB, it's about the actual device plugged into the wall, right?

No each country in the EU has their own sockets, it's the part that connects to the phone.
-
The socket/outlet is the part on the wall, the charger is the box that connects to the wall, and the cable/plug is the thing that goes from the charger to the phone. Are you saying they're going to standardize outlets across the EU?
-
No. You have 2 ends to a phone charger, the plug and the bit that plugs into the phone. The bit that plugs into the phone is going to be standardized. Why would the Smartphone companies be the ones to decide what sockets are standardized? That's a national and EU wide discussion.
-
Oh, the article is confusing then because I thought it was referring to different voltage chargers, which is a problem (some phones will charge slower because others only use lower voltage charges). I was confused because these days chargers and the cable are separate (here it's just a micro USB for the phone and a USB for the charger, so it's already standardized).
-
Yea most products here use Micro USB as well so they have chosen it for the standardized connection for all Smartphones across the EU.
-
Sweet, I kinda wish that was a global thing (assuming it allows for future innovation). I'm really glad the industry finally is trending towards universal connectors.
-
It doesn't stop innovation, now people will be trying harder than ever to be the universal standard, sure it may not bring in a lot of money but you get a lot of prestige from it which can help your company.
