Bungie acknowledges that they are fans, just like we are. They like all the same things we like in aggregate, for typically the same reasons. Bungie also interacts with us on a more personal level than some other big developers, and they know how to do it correctly. I don't really think the community itself is distinct from other fan communities though. We have the same parts, some good some bad, making up this community that makes up any substantial internet community. We just happen to have a much better general [url=http://i.imgur.com/9AYlK.jpg]fashion sense[/url] than some other communities. So...I guess that is a distinction. Yay us.
