Researchers claim a new study provides some of the most compelling evidence yet for tighter gun controls in the US.
The team followed the consequences of the State of Missouri repealing its permit-to-purchase handgun law in 2007.
The law had required purchasers to be vetted by the local sheriff and to receive a licence before buying a gun.
Reporting soon in the Journal of Urban Health, the researchers will say that the repeal resulted in an immediate spike in gun violence and murders.
The study links the abandonment of the background check to an additional 60 or so murders occurring per year in Missouri between 2008 and 2012.
"Coincident exactly with the policy change, there was an immediate upward trajectory to the homicide rates in Missouri," said Prof Daniel Webster, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research.
"That upward trajectory did not happen with homicides that did not involve guns; it did not occur to any neighbouring state; the national trend was doing the opposite – it was trending downward; and it was not specific to one or two localities – it was, for the most part, state-wide," he told BBC News.
What was stark, added Prof Webster, was the rise in the number of handguns that subsequently found their way into the hands of criminals.
The team counted a doubling of handguns shortly after sale being recovered from scenes of crimes or from criminals.
PS: the National InstaCheck System (NICS) is a federal requirement. States can not "opt out" of it. The example in MO was that the local sheriff had to review and approve the purchase as "reasonable".

This is great

Why are Brits so obsessed with what happens over here?
-
I fully oppose gun control, but background checks are important.
-
Hey look, more bait.

This proves absolutely nothing, as it doesn't even state the effects of overall violence. There have been countless instances where gun control has caused more harm, and even increased firearm crime. You're missing countless variables. http://winteryknight.wordpress.com/2011/10/05/crime-rates-in-chicago-and-dc-drop-after-gun-control-laws-are-struck-down/
The study links the abandonment of the background check to an additional 60 or so murders occurring per year in Missouri between 2008 and 2012.
Conclusion: background checks seem to be effective. Now what is the problem?
-
This isn't an argument for even tighter gun control it's just an argument for how effective thorough background checks are.

I found the author. He's way up there, isn't he?

OK? So, don't come to the US. Whether you like it or not, whether it hurts us or not, it's our problem to work out. Unless you plan on calling your PM on the phone and demanding blue helmets to keep the peace in America, your opinion matters little. It's hard to understand, but what we value more than our lives is the freedom to overcome our nature. An alcoholic should have the strength to be in a room with booze. Taking alcohol away from an alcoholic doesn't cure them. And it's not their choice. Guns in America ARE a problem. But it's one we have to work out. Taking away firearms doesn't cure our nature. Does it seem mad? Backwards? Even barbaric? Yes. Undoubtedly. But something's are more important than even lives. The freedom to decide to be more than a monster is one of those things.

i love how almost everyone except Recon hadn't the comprehension to see how he admits to purposely cherrypicking data and thus deceives the people with a waste of time.
-
Surely it has nothing to do with the 2007 recession.
-
I was literally going to post this myself.
-
You're telling me that it became easier for unstable people to get firearms when they made it so you didn't need a license or background check? What a surprise!
-
At least you didn't say something stupid this time.
-
Why the hell would they abandon background checks? Here in Texas, you don't need a permit to buy a handgun, but you still have to get a background check. It's just common fucking sense. Of course the murder rates went up when they started abandoning background checks. If that's the case then any thug, rapist, or murderer can buy a gun easily.
-
No background checks is stupid. But this still doesn't mean we should ban guns or force heavy laws on them. Increase a little on background checks, and you'll be good. Other stupid laws, like magazine size, gun shrouds, pistol grips, are just stupid.
