protein doesn't make you fat. An absurd extra amount of calories do. It's all about calories in vs calories out. If you're consuming more calories than you use during the day you'll gain weight (either fat or muscle, or both).
Fat is the most readily available macronutrient to turn into fat. But you still need some healthy fats in your diet as it helps produce testosterone among other benefits.
