Personally I think that drone technology needs to be perfected. Now, before you go full retard, this is why: Drone technology automates transportation. Driverless cars, and pilotless planes all are made possible by drone tech. This leads me to step 2. The next thing we need is perfected recycling technology. It needs to be simple, and completely automated. Finally, home based 3D printing for small goods, and automated factories for big items. Factories that can build anything. Add this up and anyone in the world can have any item they want for next to nothing. Automate food production and these steps effectively kill both communism and capitalism as working concepts. At least until the drones become aware and kill us...

  • 3D printing definitely has a lot of potential. If we can figure out how to convert energy to matter, we'll essentially have replicators a la Star Trek. Following that example, it's highly probable that a purely socialist society could emerge, though that would likely take several generations.

  • Is it actually socialist?

  • For all intents and purposes. I haven't watched all the Star Trek media yet, but capitalism and material want are explicitly things of the past. A machine that can produce whatever one wishes at the push of the button is certainly a great equalizer.

  • It is. I look forward to it. But I don't think its socialist. Its something...else. Beyond socialism. Beyond the concepts we have terms for. Which is a little scary, as the day is quickly approaching that my wallet may only need carry my identification card...

  • If that. Fingerprint scanners are already a reality, so I'm sure more progress will be made in that field. Although, thumb thieves are certainly a terrifying potential side-effect.

  • LOL...Imagine thugs walking the streets at night with bolt cutters... Another thing I am looking forward to is Artificial Intelligence in human predictive models. Basically computers that can predict and adjust to human group dynamics. Read the Foundation series to see where I'm going with this.

I'm not well read on Asimov, though I've heard that's a particularly cerebral series. (Fun fact: he was a consultant on several Star Trek projects) AI would certainly open a ridiculous amount of doors, and allow humanity to progress in ways we probably can't predict at the present. On a related note, I'd like to see research into 'consciousness conversion.' Think of how beneficial it would be to confer with the great minds of the past on current issues. The brain operates on electrical signals, so it's certainly plausible.
