You should definitely give it a chance if you like sci-fi. I've always been a Star Wars guy, so I wasn't a fan until a few months ago, when I decided to give the original series a shot (my curiosity was peaked by the Abrams films). Trek is definitely one of the more realistic sci-fi shows as far as technology goes, especially The Next Generation. Back when the original was airing, the folks at NASA actually regarded it as a future glimpse of their institution.

From what I've heard, those are the two low points of the series. TOS is good, but it is definitely dated. It reminds me a lot of the Twilight Zone, if you're in to that (one of my favorites). I'm only on the second season of TNG and its pretty solid, though I hear it really picks up by season 3. The original series films are pretty good too, though I haven't seen #5.
