Where is the desire to work if you get paid to not work. Seems pretty simple to me.

  • This assumes an equal outcome from a life built on benefits and one built on a job. I don't think that's true. The base minimum standard of living that benefits provide would hardly satisfy someone who wants to make a good life for himself. There's also the basic stigma of living off government assistance, and the lack of basic pride that comes from being a self-sustaining human. Of course, not all people think this way; any welfare program is haunted by the spectre of the Welfare Queen. But the bet is that the jobless are mostly decent people. A bad bet? Maybe so.
