Dumbest argument ever.
Opponents of an extension say that the unemployment rate has gone down, people should have planned for the expiration and gotten jobs by now, and that benefits make people too dependent on government.
You are on unemployment because there aren't any jobs. I've been actively looking to switch jobs for 13 months. There isn't that much out there. When I go on the various job boards and look for MBA level jobs, all that comes up for San Diego are managers for those Cell Phone Kiosks. The market sucks, and the only people who are debating it are those who have never looked for work, or haven't looked lately.

  • So, there aren't jobs in San Diego. There are jobs elsewhere. The U.S. is pretty big. Cities like Grand Rapids and Indianapolis are practically giving away good jobs because they're growing so quickly.

  • The people who come back with "why don't you move?" arguments have clearly never had to move. Shit's expensive. How do you do that if you don't have an income? It's hard enough to do on your own - imagine what it's like to do it with people who rely on you.

I'm not advocating extending the deadline or anything but like you said, the US is a big place. How do you expect for someone to pay for moving from one part of the country to another?

No doubt. The logistics of moving a family across the country are staggering. Many people have mortgages with little to no equity since the crash. How on earth is someone expected to short-sale their house and still wave the money to reestablish themselves elsewhere for a job that may or may not even provide competitive salaries? More so.. what if one of the spouses currently has employment in the area? Do you uproot the entire family and trade one job or another, hoping that both people find work once they move? That's just too much uncertainty to put a family through. It's just unrealistic.

Exactly. Now someone in my situation (single male, mid-20s, apartment, steady/decent income) could move easily. If I really needed to, I could just sell all the shit that doesn't fit in my car, drive to wherever, and buy new furniture when I get there (not all at once).

Cherish that freedom for as long as you have it, brother. Next time you're sitting around drinking a beer in your boxers, tip some for your less fortunate homies.

  • Actually, there are many people who are on unemployment not because they cannot find a job but because they're lazy and just collecting their Obama phones and other government programs from the gov.

That's because there is no sense in arguing somebody that is that stupid. If you honestly feel that a majority of people on unemployment are lazy, then you have a very warped sense of the way the United States runs. Coming from a state where the unemployment rate is close to 15% and the average income is about 45k, you have 0 idea what it's like to be low middle class or below poverty.
