At university here in Australia (at least for my course), grading goes like this:
High Distinction - >80%
Distinction - 70%
Credit - 60%
Pass - 50%
Fail - ~<48%
If you get around 50% (but below) you can still pass if you prove you're capable or something. But yeah. Not particularly difficult.

Obviously there's something else going on though... which would be hard to pinpoint without looking at two identical courses and contrasting the grading system and content covered. I know med is different though. Pretty sure anything below 80 is a fail there, if I remember correctly.
