Depends on the exam subject. e.g. For IT, the exam is piss-easy but anything lower than 80% is a D (which in a place where only A*'s, A's and B's are counted in any way "usable", it's terrible). While in Physics, 30% is an E/U (Fail), with 80% being A. (Mostly because the exam questions are quite tricky to understand, let alone answer)

  • I dont get lowering the curve, you need to weed out the people who dont understand, no point in giving someone the chance to specialize in a field if they can only get 80% of the questions right.

it's mostly because in Physics the subjects are broad (still less broad than GCSE's, but broad compared to Uni courses) e.g. You do Gravitational orbits, Thermodynamics, and momentum (plus a few others, which I've forgotten) all in one exam. I could excel at Thermodynamics and momentum, but then fail at Gravitational orbits and get a best mark of 66% (barely a C grade). It's a bit more complicated in reality, but you see the point. You could be exceptional and ready for a Uni course in ONE area of physics (Nuclear engineering, Astrophysics, etc ) but be useless at another, but the exam tests you if you could do ALL of them.

[/quote] Ughh, i dont see the issue, thats shit i covered in HS, we would have 2 weekly pop quizzes, and a test on the weeks curriculum on friday, 1 a month for everything covered that month, and 1 a semester for everything covered that semester, and grading didnt change, you were required to show all your work, unless you could prove you were doing it in your head. higher tier classes werent allowed a sliding bell curve for grading, you got a 70- you got a D\F.

  • I'm not following you there. I don't know how exactly the US does it's testing, so could you answer me this: Is/Was each module tested straight after it was done? (e.g. you do a topic of a subject and are then tested on it soon after, or is it all bunched up in a test after every term/half term) What's the interval between the State/Official exams?

I did a weekly cumulative test, monthly cumulative test, and a semester final which was cumulative test, all were graded, and go towards a percentage of your final, but homework and papers were also a percentage of your final. I dont think we have a comparative to state/official, unless your are thinking of the SATs or ACTs.
