Hell, it's probably said often, but it really is time and patience. The things the Bungie artists do, that's beyond me. I've spent the last month in my art class working on this less than an hour a day. Using a reference image really makes it easier than just free-drawing up something out of your head. Before I drew this I would have said the same thing you did. I'd say if you have patience it can be done.
