The GUI designed for touch screens, for non touch screen systems is a terrible concept.

seems fine with a mouse, but then i spend most of my time on the desktop. the only real difference between 8 and 7 is that the start button menu is a start screen filled with tiles instead of a list. since i havent actually used an xbox one yet i guess i can't comment on how it controls with a controller. but the 360's dashboard was easy enough, how different is this?

The XBox Ones desktop is entirely reverse of the XBox 360s. You don't see animated avatars. Login in and out easy per say, but the settings, layout, and most everything else on the XBox One looks like Windows 8. You say "Xbox Settings" and it does nothing. I'm honesty not happy with it at all.
