So I was on the phone to my brother earlier and somehow a normal "what's going on?" conversation turned into a "eventually overpopulation is going to be a big issue. Shouldn't we be looking for a solution now?" conversation.
Anyway, I went on to say that it's not like population growth isn't happening. Life expectancy is increasing and there's more births than deaths per second, yada yada yada.
You look at any population graph over the course of history and it has gone up a huge amount in the last 200 or so years. The average growth rate did drop slightly recently (no sources, I heard it somewhere), but it isn't significant enough to stop anything.
I pointed out that eventually places like India (who are already overcrowded) will look to us and want to live here because of how much space we have. He seemed to think that everything goes in cycles and we'll lose a crapload of people to disease or a world war before overpopulation becomes an issue.
I'm not an expert and so my only suggested options were:
A. People colonize underground.
B. Huge skyscrapers filled with people, everywhere
C. Spaaaaaaaaaaaace
Which were all apparently pretty funny. Until space colonization is taken seriously though, it isn't really an option.
So yeah, thoughts? Should we just live for the now and leave this to the future generations to deal with, or try and find a permanent solution?
Or, do you believe that it will never be an issue?

EDIT: So (with the help of a certain mislaid fruit) I was informed that the population of the world could live inside an area about the size of Texas and only have a population density of New York.
So, running out of space probably won't be that much of an issue in terms of live-able space. Of course everyone that gets cranky about immigrants already will get their jimmies rustled when other countries get more dense and people decide they move out (the scale of this could be small).
Resource management will still be an issue though. Vertical farms?

Space.

I'll be dead. Couldn't care less.

FIRE UP THE GAS CHAMBERS!
Spaaaaaaaaaaaace
Zero G space or terraformed planets? If it's the former I highly doubt it's an efficient alternative...

Just gas India. Those apes need to stop breeding like animals and start contributing to the world, like cleaning up the shithole which they live in.
-
Gas countries that have to many people, such as China, India, Russia, and Israel.
-
Neutron bomb the shit out of China and India. Cut the number down by 2 billion instantly.
-
We need to impose stiffer indirect penalties for having multiple children. We need to make it so that the lower class of society doesn't get more money from the government if they have more children. The middle and upper class of society need to have some sort of financial penalty for having more than 2 children. We can't outright outlaw more than 2 children, but we do need to take steps to stop people from having 21 children.

Earth is already overpopulated. Humans are a virus and spread very quickly, using up everything in their path and destroying environments, so Earth cannot sustain 7 billion humans. About 3 billion would be a good sustainable population to maintain.
-
Even if somehow there was a way to give every person and every new person born on the planet a job, the human tendency to want to go big will leave each and every person unsatisfied. Now you have an exceedingly large number of people competing to do the big jobs that make them feel like life is worth living. But since there's competition, there are also many, many people who don't get those big jobs; who live every day of their life in depression because they have a ton of potential going to waste. We're already seeing this happen.
-
I don't think it's the problem of there being too many people, there's a lot of space on land after all! It's more of a problem of not enough resources to sustain everyone! At least, that's how I see it!

Headin' down to marss
-
Global law restricting every man to fathering only 2 children.
-
Soon the earth's land will become a giant city, and not much later the earth will die.
-
Hans has something relevant to say.
-
I think the world could sustain 20 billion people.
-
Yes but people like to move to more comfortable zones. Another thing overpopulation will be an issue whether you like it or not. Another thing to ask yourself is why space colonization is noy practical. Afterall it is quite practical in the next 100 years.

We should irradiate everyone's balls.
-
An advanced society shouldn't live in a gravity well.
-
We need another plague. It a really harsh thing to say but it's true. We have to many people and not enough resources to supply.
-
The quicker LEDC's develop, the quicker the population will stabilise and begin to decrease.
-
We need nuclear fusion, that is what we need to strive toward.
-
I'm no Malthusian.
-
Why waste money and time on all those stupid things when we can force everyone to be homo? Problem solved!

After reading only the title: Mars. After reading the post: all of the above.
