Overpopulation

So I was on the phone to my brother earlier and somehow a normal "what's going on?" conversation turned into a "eventually overpopulation is going to be a big issue. Shouldn't we be looking for a solution now?" conversation. Anyway, I went on to say that it's not like population growth isn't happening. Life expectancy is increasing and there's more births than deaths per second, yada yada yada. You look at any population graph over the course of history and it has gone up a huge amount in the last 200 or so years. The average growth rate did drop slightly recently (no sources, I heard it somewhere), but it isn't significant enough to stop anything. I pointed out that eventually places like India (who are already overcrowded) will look to us and want to live here because of how much space we have. He seemed to think that everything goes in cycles and we'll lose a crapload of people to disease or a world war before overpopulation becomes an issue. I'm not an expert and so my only suggested options were: A. People colonize underground. B. Huge skyscrapers filled with people, everywhere C. Spaaaaaaaaaaaace Which were all apparently pretty funny. Until space colonization is taken seriously though, it isn't really an option. So yeah, thoughts? Should we just live for the now and leave this to the future generations to deal with, or try and find a permanent solution? Or, do you believe that it will never be an issue? inb4chinawantstheirwallback inb4OPcan'tinb4 inb3shutupscifinerd inb2youdidwhatIseethere EDIT: So (with the help of a certain mislaid fruit) I was informed that the population of the world could live inside an area about the size of Texas and only have a population density of New York. So, running out of space probably won't be that much of an issue in terms of live-able space. Of course everyone that gets cranky about immigrants already will get their jimmies rustled when other countries get more dense and people decide they move out (the scale of this could be small). Resource management will still be an issue though. Vertical farms?
