• No offense but I think actually it's that the Golden Age lasted 700 years. We don't know when the Traveler arrived and sparked the Golden Age, or how long has elapsed since the fall of humanity.

 • ign.com/articles/2012/11/28/destiny-story-details-concept-art-leaked
Our story begins seven hundred years from now in the Last City on Earth, in a Solar System littered with the ruins of man’s Golden Age.
They were quite explicit in saying that Destiny takes place 700 years in the future.

 • That's leaked, I mean, yeah it could be true but it's far from official. Besides, why wouldn't we remember the event that destroyed our civilization and have futuristic facilities completely overtaken by nature if it had just happened? Official releases talk about a dark age descending and giving birth to the Guardians, Titans having a lineage who defended the early City, and stories of a Golden Age long ago.
"Legends say the Traveler sacrificed itself to save us. The mysterious sphere still hangs where it made its last stand, low above the Earth, keeping silent watch. The years that followed the collapse of the Golden Age were hard. But slowly we joined together to build a city beneath the traveler and now we've begun to venture back into the wild."
All of that together makes me think of the Golden Age as long gone.
Bungie has confirmed to IGN that the document was prepared by an advertising agency and represents an outside look at Destiny’s plot, key values and more.
Remember, this was almost a year ago.

 • Oh yeah, I forgot it was an outside ad agency, thanks for the reminder. Well, kind of hard to argue with that but the fact that they pasted on their own concept art doesn't help to convince me. With all due respect to all parties, I'll believe the outside perpesctive of Destiny's mission statement when Bungie confirms it. They have a tight set of scheduled parameters of phrases they're allowed to speak within, personally I don't think they take them lightly... Or at least I don't take them lightly! D:

 • I'm pretty sure that they said what Bungie told them to say.

 • I've seen advertising agency mock-ups, furthermore, for all we know this was done by a company without video game experience to provide a general audience reaction/grasp. With all the media's confusion and difficulty with reporting on the initial, in person reveal in February(?) I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't fully 'get' Destiny or the minute details enough to provide a meaningful glimpse (or if they were even trusted with the full treatment, the document leaked after all). True, that statement did have a lot of the keyword phrases we've seen in the meantime since its spill. Listen to the podcast again and you can pick out the speakers trying to hit on new and old keyword phrases, elaborating, sometimes delving into casual conversation, and then being redirected by Urk or Deej. They edited the shit out it, I'm sure, even at Bungie pace it still took awhile to reach us. How many other offhanded, yet seemingly relevant and therefore oddly presumptuous, comments can you pick out of the final cut?

 • I'm just saying that it's Bungie, and I don't think they wouldn't just let the advertising company change or add too much to make it appealing to the consumers if it was different from what Bungie said.

 • Fair enough, I just won't believe it until I hear it from Bungie, especially in light of the correlating circumstances.

 • I think someone should ask DeeJ, if only to see how cryptic and vague his answer is.

 • I'm not trying to be a jerk but I forgot about this site and just now found this on it. Under the section: Welcome to the Frontier
For centuries we've huddled under the safety of the Traveler, protected from our enemies.
• I think that could reasonably fit into a 700-year time frame. If the Traveler arrived in the 23rd-24th century (or maybe even the 22nd), then that would give us at least 100 years of prosperity before the enemy attacks and humanity is left huddling under the Traveler, and the time under the Traveler could be 300 years, more than enough time to forget what happened that wiped them out if no written records are being kept, and that brings us to the 28th century, where the game takes place.

 • Yeah definitely. For the life of me, I can't seem to find the source for what gave me the initial impression that the Golden Age itself was 700 years!

 • Maybe you just misread the sentence saying that the game takes place 700 years in the future.

 • No, I remember being like, "what..?" when I read it. Hmm. Now I'm really wondering if he just said it in contrast to 'twenty first century' so the feeling was instantly identifiable. But even so, why has Bungie never repeated "700 years from the present day" anywhere? GAH!

 • They haven't really repeated the fact that the game is always online, either, since they said it early on.

 • Well, true but technically they never actually said it early on. The ad company did.

 • Again, I'm pretty sure everything they said was only what Bungie let them say. Bungie wouldn't just let them say 700 years if it weren't true. Other companies might, but not Bungie.

 • Mock ups like that aren't meant to be published. They're for internal use only, so whatever company it's about can have an idea of what their or their products public image is or will be. The company or product in focus is completely at the mercy of the ad agency. It has no control or influence over the process of creating these things.

 • Haha I asked him what the Bungie panel imagined the beginning of the fourth millennium might be like if they were so inclined to daydream about it. I guess they didn't think it was sufficiently concealed because it wasn't in the Sack. It looks like we'll have to bide our time for them to tell us when they're ready.
