I've had a total of one credit card my entire life. I got it during undergrad, and when I got it my credit limit was $3000. I've had the card now for almost 9 years. I don't use it much, but when I do it has always been pretty handy. I use it mostly for unexpected stuff, the last big thing I bought was a treadmill after my old one died during the winter.
I finished paying off the treadmill in June. I was thinking to myself that my limit has always been $3000. I should ask for an increase to $5000. No reason other than, "just because."
I called them up and talked to a nice guy about it. He filled out an application for me and said I will get the result in 2-3 business days. Well...I got that result this weekend and was a little shocked.
I got a letter in the mail that said, "Congratulations! Your credit limit has been approved. Your new credit limit is $3000."
I read it 2 or 3 times to make sure I was reading it right. They sent me a letter "congratulating" me on the fact my credit limit was not changed. I thought that that was a total dick move on their part. If you weren't going to change the limit, at least send me a letter that just said no.
I called them up to see what the deal was. Turns out that the guy I talked too was an idiot. he apparently requested a "total limit" change of $2000. What he should have requested was a "total limit" of $5000. He put the difference between my current total and my requested total. This made the people who approve this stuff crazy, so they "re-approved" my old limit and the automated system cut me a letter.
It is being fixed now.
I got my first credit card about 2 years ago.. I started out at a $300 limit.. Now it is at $1,000.. I use it when I want to build up my credit score.. I pay it off before any interest is due : ). Since then, I've been getting spammed with credit cards and laugh at their interest rates.
My card is between 6 to 9% I believe and American Express comes in at 12%.. I giggle at them.
